Hello Scubaboard,

I picked up this harness and wing from a tag sale for cheap. It seems to have never been used but it is an older model Scubapro Xtek Harness and wing. I am a little confused on the setup. Do I need to get a Backplate for this system? Or can I just throw some weights on the straps? Also, Is it possible to just thread some weight pockets on to the hip straps and use those as my ditchable weights, or would you suggest getting a weight belt? Thanks.

You don't NEED a back plate with it, but I run one. Though I'm diving the newest version of it. Honestly, it's overdone. But it works for me. I dive warm water too, and like the padding. A straight back plate and harness over a skin/shiry/rashy can suck hard. With the SP set up, it's just as comfortable as if you're wearing neoprene.

You should be able to feed the cam buckles (Tank straps) through the slots in the wing and they'll stay together when wrapped on a tank.
To keep them together more "permanently" purchase sex bolts and screw them through the top & bottom grommet holes that line up between the wing & Harness. There's metal & plastic varieties. Metal will scratch your tanks and paint, if you care.

For weighting, you can do ditchable pockets, weightbelt, or DUI Weight harness.
May have to take some padding off the waist strap to make ditchable pockets more ergonomic. It's hard to see, not enough contrast in the photo to get an idea.

Backplate would be optional; if you want rigidity & extra weight.
As for a backplate, I believe you may be able to slide a backplate in a pouch that's part of the harness backing.
To get all the holes lined up properly, it'll have to be a Scubapro one.
If not Scubapro, you'll have to buy an STA to attach the cam straps to the wing, as they won't thread through then as described above. With that last option, you should use carriage bolts instead of sex bolts to attach everything together through the grommet holes. Reason being those bolts will now be bearing weight.
