My twins are 12 now. They started at 10, and I gave them a MK20/G250 each, right after our 1st dive trip. They look a bit funny in the pics, and a lot better in real life. I told them it's the ultimate reg, and they never complained. So size doesn't matter. 
If you really want small, the S555 (non-adj) and the S600 (adj) are based on more or less the same principle, but with more plastic inside and breath a bit less good. Or maybe the new C300.
Any second can be used with the MK10; just tweak the orifice a bit to adjust for the IP. Remove the hose, turn the orifice counter-clockwise a bit while holding down the purge, put the hose back, pressurize, repeat until it free flows, then back up until it stops.

Just as Zung said the S550/S555/ S600 and G250 all use the same parts kit. They are very similar and you should be able to get a S550 or S555 at a reasonable price. The G250 and S600 are a little crazy right now.
my son 12 years old dives a s600 primary and s555 octo on a mk17 these are a good size for him and should last him a long time.
