I was browsing around and located a reel manufactured by ScubaPro. It looks like a pretty nice one at that. Plus they make a small spool and a large SMB. Just did a check on here and saw that the reel has been around for sometime now. The only problem - its only sold to non-US countries. Can anybody shed some light on the reasoning why? And also how I could get one?

SP is notorious for having certain products that are only available over seas. This is not something new. Some other manufacturers do this as well. Do you have a photo of this reel? Personnaly, I would stay away from products a that are not distributed here in the U.S. or Canada. Reason being it's very hard to deal with if you have any warranty problems.

IMO, the best reel on the market is the Halcyon Pathfinder 400.
- Simple design
- Made from great materials
- Compact
- Easy to use

Ouch - at $169, that's pretty hefty. What would anyone recommend for, say, 50' to 100'? A simple SMB deployment line that's easy to use in gloves, please?

$169 maybe hefty but the reel does not foul and if it does because of user error, you can fix it underwater. Biggest cause of reels fouling is because the line jumps the spool and gets jammed between the handle and this is impossible to to because the specs are so tight. Why not try to prevent a potential problem before you even enter the water?

For a Safety Spool I personally recommend 150'. Here is a neat option for a spool. Halcyon offers a Cold Water Spool (100' or 150'). Spool has a bigger bore on the center and an extra section on the side that you can clip a double-ender to in order to serve as a handle while winding up.

As a NJ Wreck Diver - and one of Wayne's students - I can vouch for the fact that it's nearly impossible to bird-nest the H Pathfinder. God knows if can't foul one, no one can. (Especially with Wayne stealing your light, simulating a blow-burst disk, and asking for your mask to be removed... all at the same time.

As a crew member on a local boat for several years that takes 18 passengers per wreck charter, I can say I've never seen ANYONE come up with a fouled Pathfinder. Fouled Dive Rite's? All day long. OMS? Octopus' garden!

And for goodness sakes, stay away from anything with ratchets or springs or or brakes or self-reeling mechanisms. Just asking for trouble.

You can read my "mini review" of the Halcyon Pathfinder at the link that Wayne provided...
