I can not beleive that you would risk damaging a $300.00 frist stage. All you have to do mis take it to the shop that has the tools and the know how. Pay them and save the reg. and maybe your life. It could not cost that much.

The grinding bit does work, it's exactly what I use. I didn't grind it, AWAP did and maybe he'll post on this thread. He cut some notches in the socket that fit under the arms of the yoke. The problem with the adjustable wrench in general is torquing the nut to spec, but in this case, since you're replacing it with the DIN fitting, it should work fine. You'll still need the torque wrench to install the DIN. If you don't have one, it might be cheaper to pay someone to do it.

That does not work. I destroyed a high quality Craftsman socket for nothing. It still would not clear, after grinding it to almost nothing. :

It works, you just have to grind away everything that does not look like a yoke nut socket. :D Pictures are in my photo gallery.

To Op: For a one time shot (if the LDS won't loosen the yoke nut for you), you could clamp the nut in a good vice and turn the 1st stage. There should be about 22 ft lb of torque and some light corrosion in the threads is pretty common but it should do the trick. You might even have to make breaker bar out of an appropriate diameter length of PVC pipe to give you a little extra leverage. Looks to me like a 2 ft length of 1.5 inch ID PVC would do the trick. Get somebody to help hold the reg down in the vise as it will only be gripping less than 1/8th inch of the yoke nut.

That reminds me - Mattboy, did I lend you my 1/4 inch drive yoke nut socket for an old MK5 with the light yoke?

Edit: digimidi - if you don't find an easier solution, PM me with an address and I'll lend you my socket.

Sure, he could take it to a shop but some may refuse to loosen the yoke nut for him - liability BS. They will want to do the complete conversion.

You would have to screw up pretty bad to mess up the reg. I really would like to hear about what you are thinking he could do that would put his life in danger. But there is a real danger in giving it to some unknown tech who has had a couple days training and is fully qualified to screw it up at the customers expense. (Yes, I had a few bad experiences before I turned to DIY)

Yep, and I meant to bring it today on the dive, but as you know *occasionally* I forget stuff. I can send it or we'll just have to meet up for another dive soon.

P.S. I hope you checked out the CD

The CD was great. We listened to it all the way home. Who would have ever thought of a Jazz Accordion?

I'll get the socket from you next time we meet. I was just looking to see if I could lend one to the OP and realized I was missing one. My tools look a little like your car. But, as I pointed out to Judy, if you had cleaned up and thrown the receipt out from Central Market, lunch might not have been as good.
