Hi,
I am looking at getting my first really good reg in the over $250 price range and looking at the SP G250. I want something that will eventually work for tech diving but afriad I don't know much about SP's 1st stage line up.

Can someone give me a 'crash course' on whats good, better or best of the 1st stage line up?

I have already decided on the G250. I want something that is DIR approved as I am slowing heading in that direction.

I am also considering the Apeks TX50, but since there are more SP dealers near me, servicing the SP would be easier than Apeks.

thanks,

SP Mk25 - Piston reg. Great reg. Probably the best 1st stage around. Easy to service, excellent hose routing, and very reliable. Outstanding.

SP Mk16 - Diaphram reg. Also breathes great. One of the nicest diaphram regs. Diaphram is nice for very cold/ice diving. Hose routing is not quite as good but still acceptable. Nice reg.

Both fit your criteria. The Mk25 is a bit more expensive and is supposed to perform a little better. The difference is not really relevant though. I went with the Mk25.

Good choice on the G250.

I bought the ScubaPro MK25, with the G250 as primary and the R380 as backup. I did my 4th and 5th dives on them today, and am very happy with my purchase.

Of course, I only have the crappy rental hear from my LDS to compare it to, but I certinaly feel I got my money's worth.

I actually had walked into the shop planning on buying the Apeks ATX200. While I was talking to the guy at the shop he mentioned that ScubaPro has a lifetime warranty while Apeks does not. As long as I get my regs services once a year, all parts are free. I liked that, so chose the SP over the Apeks.
