Gettin muddy for clean water: An underwater grass planting project
Help the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay improve water quality and establish food and shelter for the Bays many species by planting underwater grasses. Volunteers will spend the day planting eelgrass and dispersing eelgrass seeds in Kingscote Creek, VA- a beautiful tributary of the Coan River and the Lower Potomac. Lunch will be provided. Come be a part of this exciting project and contribute your time and enthusiasm towards hands-on Bay restoration efforts!
WHEN: Saturday, October 16th, 2004 10:00 am- 2:30pm
WHERE: Kingscote Creek, VA- Volunteers will meet at the Lewisetta Marina located on the Coan River (804)529-7299. Directions to the Lewisetta Marina: from Route 360, travel North on Route 624. Continue on Route 624 towards the town of Lewisetta. The marina will be located at the end of Route 624- follow sings for parking.
WHAT: Eelgrass Planting and Seed Dispersal--This is part of a submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) habitat restoration project. No prior experience is required. Volunteers will help plant eelgrass (Zostera marina L.) shoots and disperse seeds in Kingscote Creek, VA.
Volunteers Needed:
S.C.U.B.A. Divers Needed- Certified S.C.U.B.A. divers are needed to assist with the planting activity. Divers must provide their own SCUBA gear.
The Alliance also needs a total of 30 volunteers that are willing to get in the water and assist in this restoration activity- please dress appropriately with wetsuits, chest waders and other items needs to keep you warm in the October waters!
