my boyfriend and i are planning a vacation this coming January (i know, i know, that's a long way off...) and want to go somewhere warm with lots of diving. the only warm dive spot i have been to is Belize, this past March. he will be newly certified. we would like to be in a place where the rainy season is over.

any suggestions?? as a side note, we would prefer somewhere less touristy, less cruise ship congested, less MTV Spring Break-ish....

i would really like to go to roatan...but have heard that january is iffy and still considered the rainy season. he would like to go to the caymans, but it seems quite expensive. we are also considering a trip to Scuba Club Cozumel with our LDS.

any advice will be greatly appreciated. thank you thank you!!!! :bounce:

Might I suggest San Andres Island, Colombia? Really laid back, safe, half Caribbean, half Latin, inexpensive, great diving and weather in January, no cruise ships, no MTV, just alot of really friendly locals and mainly Canadian and European sun lovers who don't want the word to get out.

Gateways from the US are mainly two: Miami and LAX. From LAX you can get a flight to Bogota and then on to San Andres. I know a few Americans that do that route. You can dive with Wernito, who is a big jolly German guy, for $35 US/two tank dive. Hotels are generally cheap.

Hope this helps. Unfortunately my dive trip originates from Toronto or I would be pleased to take you two diving. Went there twice last year.

And another great choice for me would be Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, at the tip of Baja California. I think the flight was with Aero California out of LAX. Cabo is very romantic and beautiful. CSL has a few dive operators, and nearby Cabo Pulmo off the Sea of Cortez is supposed to excellent for diving. I dove off the town of Loreto, farther North up the Baja, at Christmas, about 3 years ago. It was great, the fluorescence in the water at night was spectacular, but Loreto can be abit chilly in the Winter. If you go to CSL, stay at Los Milagros hotel in town, and say hello to Sandra. She is the American proprietor, hopefully still there, and the place was really cute and inexpensive. Eating is a pleasure in CSL.

Well since I'm from Florida I gotta represent my home state hehe. The Florida Keys as well as South Florida have an abundance of good dive spots. And you can always drive a couple hours north and hit some natural springs as well.

Check out the Turks & Caicos Islands. They seem to meet all of your requirements. We have been going for years and can't imagine a better spot to relax and enjoy some really great diving.
