After reading a thread that touched an issue of scuba tank stamping and safety, I wanted to know if anyone had opinions on the need for better inspection and safety in regards to tanks.
 
I think as a whole the dive industry is better than any other, we exceed any DOT recommendations for inspection. (We voluntarily conduct visual inspections on an annual basis)

I think the number of tanks out there and the accidents occuring show we are doing it correctly.

One item I have seen that may become a problem is the lack of maintenance on fixed bank systems... If we do not start taking a more pro-active stance on our larger gas storage systems then I think we will begin to see more accidents of this nature... Many systems are getting pretty old...

Another is going to be overfilling of cylinders... I am not interested in debating the cylinder integrity with anyone or pressure ratings in other countries... The fact I would like to point out is that in the event something does occur with either the fill system or cylinder itself the liability will all fall directly on the operator (who is violating the DOT regulations...)
