Divers,

I hope all is well. We need volunteers for Scuba Show 2008 at the Long Beach Convention Center! SCUBA Show 2008 - June 21st & 22nd @ The Long Beach Convention Center We will be tabling both Saturday and Sunday, June 21st and 22nd. 10am – 6pm on Saturday, and 10am to 5pm on Sunday. Get in for free and help the Baykeeper get the word out about our kelp forests and what we are doing to help! Please contact me if you’re interested.

Also, Huge Thanks to the following divers who dove with us over the weekend to wrangle in some serious urchin biomass. Visibility averaged 20 feet over the weekend!

Heather Wilson
Ian Craig
Laurel Fink
Kevin Mills
Jeremy Wortzman
Angelique Neugent

We got a record for the number of red urchins ever taken in one day: 1235 red urchins!!! Many of these urchins were found consuming kelp just outside the boundaries of our site. :no It is a battle for sure.

Baykeeper landmark: As of last weekend, we have now removed 200,000 urchins from Long Point. Excellent work everyone! Without you all diving with us, we wouldn’t get much done at all. Large expanses of Long Point are now free of urchins. We have kelp coming back as well as numerous fish and invertebrates populating the cleared reefs. It’s looking great so far! Now we have to reduce the urchin population back to natural urchin densities (1/square meter) on the surrounding reef to ensure the urchins do not migrate back into the site. This way we will be restoring a much larger area than the site that is now recovering and the kelp growing now will be a spore source for the surrounding reef. We must do this before we move on to Point Vicente.

We need your help to accomplish this! We could use some more divers the weekend of May 24 and 25th. Also if you have any weekdays that you can dive, please let me know. I’m going to create a list of weekday divers. Thanks so much.

Yours in urchin relocation,

Brian
