Why is it that scuba diving masks are so bulky compared to the free diving mask. Isn't a slimmer mask better?

I have both a scuba and free diving mask and seem to like my free diving mask much more. Let me point out that my free diving mask lens is glass NOT plastic so it wont crack under pressure.

I think a mask is a mask. It really makes no difference on what you choose as long as it is comfortable for you. I belive freedivers prefers lower volume mask so less air is needed to equalize them. Freedivers could use a mask marketed towards scuba divers and the same goes for scuba divers using masks marketed for freedivers... They are the same thing. :)

I use medium volume masks for both SCUBA and freediving. I mainly freedive.

Low volume masks are for all applications, SCUBA, snorkeling, freediving, swimming.

Some like large volume masks.

If it fits and is comfortable is what counts.
