Scuba, Filmed In 1973 And Narrated By Lloyd Bridges

This film was shot by a friend of mine way back in 1973. He had hoped that it would introduce the sport of diving to all those who thought it was only for hairy chested men with huge dive knives. As it turned out, not many actually saw the film. We have posted the movie in it's entirety in the link below.

According to the DoE of the Cayman Islands, we had almost 90% live coral coverage back when this film was shot. Today we have only 18%!!

I liked it. I was most interested in seeing how the reefs looked back in the day, but it was a cool little travel movie. Unfortunately, I can see why it never got a wide release. Feel good travel movies just won't put butts in seats. Today a movie like that would do much better because there are outlets like the Travel Channel and Discovery. It was interesting to see all that today is a not just a faux pas, but down right illegal. Pulling themselves along by grabbing sponges, punching basket sponges, hacking at every artifact. I particularly liked when they decided to raise a sugar jug and split in two. I think riding the turtle will get you five years in the US. Not to mention excavating everything they find. Hey! historic cannons! Lets take one home....

I would have loved the chance to explore some of those islands before big tourist took over everything.
