Thinking of taking a dive internship with subway in roatan. Im taking paramedic school next year so i have a gap year. Does this sound like something that would work together? I live in Canada. Thanks guys.

If you work at a fire department there's a good chance you can cross train to become a search and recovery diver for the department. The diving is somber and viz usually sucks from what I've heard though.

You might also think about your diving education prior to joining a S&R dive unit. Learning in warm water like Roatan and then diving as a career in Canada means learning a drysuit or thick weight suit buoyancy characteristics. It's probably more efficient to learn these things from the get go, that way you won't have to learn as you go when while taking an S&R class.

g1138, do you think it would be possible to do some of the training in Roatan in a drysuit?

Very possible, but not in the way that you think. If you have a shell drysuit you can dive it anywhere. You'd just need a very thin undergarment to avoid overheating in the tropical waters.

I've never been to Roatan but just basing off the assumption of the water temp, finding an drysuit instructor or even a drysuit for rental in Roatan will be very unlikely in my mind.
If you had those two though you can certainly train in Roatan, the buoyancy characteristics will still be different so it's not complete training for the eventual transfer to cold water diving.

excellent points made by g1138. I would suggest you get as much drysuit diving as you can, you can certainly get started in Canada, buy a shell drysuit and dive it anywhere you go in the world. Public safety diving is very different from recreational diving, but diving experience is a big plus.

I am a rescue worker and recruits that have scuba diving experience tend to handle confined spaces and smoke diving gear well. It appears that experience with a mask that restricts your field of vision and somewhat constrained breathing via apparatus contributes to better stress handling across the board.
If you can find a way to volunteer or assist in any way at a local hospital or rescue service while on your gap year, I would recommend this as well.

As for internships, I would suggest paying for your divemaster, as then you are the paying customer with the power of going elsewhere if you are not happy, and once you have your DM cert, doing the internship and perhaps getting some of your course price refunded. That way you have more controll over your own destiny.

Hi Andrew,

It doesn't matter if you're in a paramedic school.
I think it's a great idea and I'm sure you will enjoy their internship program.
