I am going to Virginia the first weekend of October. Whats the scuba diving like? I am flying into Norfolk, and meeting my brother who works in Richmond. Is the shore diving any good, or should we go out on a charter? We will have only one day of diving (sunday). Any info would be appreciated.

Doc Intrepid:
You may want to check out Lynnhaven:
http://www.ldcscuba.com/

I was checking out their website and came across this dive spot: Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Islands. Has anyone dived this area and can tell me a little about it. I have relatives who live nearby that I occasionally visit and could maybe try this on a visit. I also saw on their website that Virginia Beach may have a couple of shore dives. Has anyone tried those?

Weather permitting, every shop should be diving.

There is Lynnhaven Dive Center and Wreckmaster in Virginia Beach, Divers Unlimited in Norfolk, and several shops around the area putting people on "Flyingfish". I drive the boat for Divers Unlimited.

The shore diving here is not much. The viz is pretty low close in.

Fall striped bass season opens 04 October, so get your diving at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in before then. After that you will pretty much have the offshore structure to yourself. The crowds at the CBBT will be unbelievable.

The viz is not great at the CBBT, but the spearfishing is often very good. It is often used for certification dives.
