Hi,

I've been quite fortunate to have started my diving hobby with a bang - going to Sipadan right after my Open Water diving training.

In hindsight, I should have tried to clock a few more diving trips before the Sipadan trip - I would have enjoyed the diving experience better. I needed to learn to control my buoyancy amongst other things.

But I had the good fortune to meet up with a bunch of remarkable people and exceptional weather conditions which made it the best diving trip so far.

I compiled a video of some of my best moments in diving trips. The big white manta was taken - of all places - in Dayang in December. Visibility was very bad; one dive got scratched because you couldn't see a thing once you jumped into the sea. However it was the season to see the big stuff - and we got lucky with that manta sighting.

Check it out on youtube when you're free.

Diving in Sipadan, Dayang, Manado, Maldives

Diving in Manado was fun but visibility was unfortunately poor when we got there in May - which was suppose to be a good month.

That's one problem with diving or skiing or mountaineering etc... a lot of the fun is linked to external factors like weather. There's really no substitute for clear visibility when you're diving. One of the best diving experiences was jumping into dropoff point in Sipadan and starring down to 50m+ of clear vis.

I would also highly recommend that new divers do not get a camera or video until they've gotten a good number of dives under their belt. The temptation to "follow the fish" can have unpleasant consquences for the diver - as the fish have no need to consider depth issues.

If you're going to dive in Sipadan - I can heartily recommend staying in Kapalai - a resort built on top of the sea. No beach, no land, no mossies. Just beautiful scenes of the ocean. (As at 2008, you can't stay at Sipadan proper due to security/political issues).

Hello,
You can't stay at Sipadan because of the conservation project from the Malaysian - Sabah government. Not so much political issues.

Well, I've been to Dayang, the Maldives and the Similan Islands. All were terrific sites but I like the entire experience better at Dayang. We had food from the American School (Singapore), wine from the New Zealand and Australian embassies, curry made from indigenous coconuts and a simple tent on the beach. Great people and good dives.

The trick is to avoid putting the tent under the coconut trees.
