I agree that you would be wise to read your OW text before starting your class, both the NAUI and PADI texts have quite a bit of material to read.
Other dive books, I don't know. I've noticed that books have been suggested on some of the threads I read, so maybe if you post a hello note on the intro's forum and ask the same question you'll get leads where to look.
Since you're fairly new and this is your first post, I can also suggest that reading the forums is both entertaining and informative.

Now for my stock greeting message, which is still under construction:
This is a great place to meet people, talk about diving, and get information on just about any aspect of diving -or other subjects sometimes- that you can think of. Roaming through the forums is great help for me.
When you post a question, be as sure as you can that it's in the right forum or you'll probably find it moved.
The folks here are passionate about their diving, some about their specialty, so the reading can get very interesting, sometimes very hot.
Don't forget, if you haven't already done it, to fill out you profile as completely as reasonable, it'll save you being asked and having to repeat the information often.
Enjoy!

Just did a couple of quick searches and keywords, "Book review" resulted in 139 threads; keyword, "book" gave 500 hits. So that's probably the way to go for information.
Now I'm curious.

scubadiverjunkie:
Get the book from the agency that you are going to be trained by and start getting a jump on the course material :)

I agree with this suggestion and would add that you may want to read up on some basic physics. It doesn't have to be in any great depth. Read about Boyle's law, Admonton's law, Archimedes principle, light refraction, Dalton's law etc, etc, etc.

I would get the OW coursebook from the agency you are going with and perhaps later get the AOW book if you are going to be laid up for a while.

You may want to get another more extensive book to fill in the gaps. I have found it helpful.

"The New Science of Skin and Scuba Diving" has been through several editions and goes into considerably more detail than the open water (or advanced open water) courses. I have two editions that I found in bookstores.

I have heard good things about PADI's "Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving", although I have never opened one myself.

All good ideas so far, I remember seeing not to long ago someone form Louisiana peddling a new book he wrote on diving. Someone on the board may be able to find the link or the post.

Welcome to the board and to diving, if your like a lot of us you might as well sell all your other toys to make room for all your new scuba toys!!

One other thing, depending on the training agency, you'll probably need to get your doctor to OK a medical form for your scuba class since you just had surgery. The dive store that you're taking your class through should have a simple form for your doctor to fill out. You could get that taken care of while your laying around the house watching Oprah, Jerry, and Dr. Phil ! LOL-Have Fun-M
