Hello,

I am planning on visiting Grand Cayman in July and was bringing my sea scooter with me.

I like to dive on a boat in the a.m., but in the afternoon I like to do my own shore diving.

I have swum all the way out from 7 Mile Beach to the Oro Verde wreck before in full scuba gear twice and had no problem. Took me about 40 minutes to swim out there and there is no current. Calm as a lake. Much fun.

Here are my questions:

Is it possible and safe to scooter out to Trinity Caves or the main wall on the west side of Grand Cayman, tie off my scooter to the dive buoy and dive there?

Or any of the wall sites on the west side?

What about shore diving on the East End? Is it safe to dive Babylon from the shore?

Someone recommended I dive the wall behind the Morritz Condos on the East Side of the island but the breakers and waves looked daunting to me and I cancelled my attempt.

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to my trip there.

Babylon is a great dive and can be done from shore if you know what you are doing. It is the only way I have done it. This entire area is just awesome.

Dont even think about diving from the Morritts Condos. This is from a shore diving guide to Grand Cayman :

"Strong tidal streams are common at entrances to lagoons as well. Even with the small tide changes common to the tropics, a lot of water can pile up during the incoming tide. The water comes right over top of the reef. As the tide recedes, the water in the lagoon has only one way out. The water can really move, and it's impossible to swim against it. "

Thanks, Ian.

A friend of mine said he had dived "right behind the Morrits Condos and it's a great dive site." I saw the breakers and decided to ask someone at a dive shop in the area and they told me I could get killed so I cancelled the dive. Thanks for the info and clueing me in on that book about shore diving in G.C.

Now, what about scootering out to Trinity Caves from 7 Mile Beach? Anyone know?

Actually it is a CD not a book
http://www.comdive.com/gc.htm It had some interesting information but overall I was somewhat disappointed with it

The dock at Morrits used to be a great snorkelling site before Ivan blew it away, maybe your friend was thinking of that?

My guess is that you could scooter out to the SMB sites OK. Main problem might be avoiding boat traffic?

Divetech at the Turtle Farm is a very nice shore dive, have seen quite a few divers using scooters there (Divetech rents them) It would be a good place to put in.

Why risk the scooter? Swim out to Trinity Caves/Round rock from the car park at the Turtle Farm Road right at the North end of 7 Mile Beach.

Scootering off the pier at Cobalt is always nice. It's north of SMB and a great dive. Talk to the people at DiveTech. They can give you pretty good info on scooter diving.

Because it's a very long tiring swim. Although I'm fit enough to do it, I'd rather just scoot on out there. Why would you consider it risking the scooter? Am I missing something here?

Thanks, Pam. I've heard it's a good dive and it's on my list.
