Curious as to if any of you have done Scapa Flow in 7mm. If so, what time of year was it? Was the water temp unbearable?

I dived Scapa Flow back in August 2013. This is the warmest month of the year. I used my drysuit with lots of undergarments and was quite warm. Water was 11C every dive, top to bottom (42 metres).

Back home in Sydney I use a 5/7 mm semi-dry (thicker on body) mostly, but below 15C it is cold. I normally use my drysuit below 18C with less undergarments than I used in Scapa. I think I used a 10 mm suit when diving in Alabama in 2012, that water was 13C and I was quite warm.

I've seen someone dive the wrecks in a wetsuit once, pretty short dives. Old school hardcore diver.

Drysuit is the norm all year round as far as I can tell. Not sure why would anyone dive Scapa in a wetsuit unless your drysuit leaks - and Ben at Scapa Scuba can fix that overnight.

Some stats from my dive computer:
  • April: 8 degrees
  • September: 13 degrees
  • October - November: 10 degrees
(all Celsius)

Note to self ... Scapa Flow in September.

If you're going all that way to dive it you might as well enjoy it. Drysuit 100%. The wrecks are all relatively deep, so whatever thickness wetsuit you have you'll freeze your ass off during the dive.
