SCAM: Former AT&T Wireless Customers Beware

I recevied a text message containing the following

From: 926915
Msg: Cingular Free
Msg: Your text message email address has changed FROM
wireless#@mobile.att.net to wireless#@mmode.com. Please notify senders of this change.

Seeing mmode.com as being an unsual domain name, I called Cingular and the indicated that this is incorrect and that they are having problems with someone sending these out. She indicated that some how, by openning the message, they would charge me. I asked how, and she said she didn't know.

At this point, I am not concerned about the charge, but had I implemented this change (a route where my works pages get to me), my privacy and security would no doubt have been compromised.

Don't fall for it.....when in doubt, check it out.

Anyone know of another board where this should be posted for greater visibility?

OK. I finally was able to do a whois on mmode.com and it appears to be owned by Cingular. So another call to their tech support and now the story is that its correct to make the change. I just tested it and seems to work and the return path is via an airdata.com mailserver...also registered to Cingular.

So I guess its a case of uninformed Cingular Tech Support. I am closing this thread and I apologize for the confusion.
