signed, but not sure how much power the online petition will actually have...we are talking about international bodies of government here...i don't think they answer to much of anyone

Hi All,
Gary Stokes here from Sea Shepherd. Just to let you all know, there is a whole lot more going on with regards to CITES and the Dr Giam/Conflict of Interest than just this petition. The petition is just a small part of the campaign. Agree there are many petitions floating around, it seems everyone must have one on something nowadays. We use this petition as a talking point for the media, and to show CITES that many people are also concerned with this same issue.
If you want to see what else has been occurring then please check out this FB page that I set up where I drop everything related. https://www.facebook.com/drgiam
Right now we're getting fired up for the 62nd CITES Standing Committee meeting that will be in July,2012. This is where they meet to discuss the daily operations of CITES etc.

In August 2011 the Chairman of the Animals Committee Sr. Solana briefed the committee and claimed that "there has never been a problem with Conflict of Interest within the Scientific Committees". Unfortunately for Sr. Solana we sent a copy of the 50 page report on Dr Giam's Conflict of Interest to them the month before (July 2011). This was received and we were told it would be passed immediately to the Chairman of the Animals Committee, Sr. Solana.

We have just dispatched the attached flyer to all members of the Standing Committee and the CITES Secretariat, asking them to re-open the Conflict of Interest issue and get it introduced within CITES immediately. If this proviso is implemented, it will be huge in terms of conservation. The blockage will be removed and scientists will finally be heard, and protection can be granted. Then we'll just have to make sure it is enforced!!!
