'Got back from Bonaire earlier this year, & discovered very fine sand on my Sony Marinepak o-ring. Because it hadn't been opened & reclosed the last couple days (I had a rather turbulent shore exit the last morning), I fortunately did not have any flooding issues - but I'm worried about the next trip. Any ideas on how to safely remove the sand without damaging the o-ring? I'm wondering if there is a silicon friendly solvent that can remove the lube & sand, or should I just reapply the lube & use a lint free cloth to rub the sand off 'till its all gone??

It's as simple as dbh says.

I suggest you remove your O-ring after every use, inspect it, and keep it in a ZipLoc bag. It keeps it clean as well as prevents it from getting "memory" from staying in the housing slot.
