Right now you can bid on one week at Grand Lido with air from NY for $1,000 per person. The only catch is that the bid will go up over the next eight hours....but how much????

I do hear very good things about Swept Away. It's a great place for activity oriented people as well as beach people.

Be sure to stay away from Couples Sans Souci or Ocho Rios if diving is important. The north coast is not well known for diving and is frequently rough water causing dive trip cancellation.

Since we're talking about Negril, I would like to mention 3 great places to eat: Kuyaba on the Negril beach is excellent; The Rockhouse on the cliffs is excellent; and the finest in Negril is Xtabi, also on the cliffs at the west end of Negril. The service at Xtabi is outstanding and I can't image a better place to watch a sunset in the whole caribbean. Just an outstanding place for a romantic dinner. They will even send a car to pick you up at your local hotel. Bring a camera annd get there 30 minutes before sunset, watch the sun pass, and finish your dinner by candlelight. The Wife and I try to do this for our anniversary every June. (Down to just 49 days to go!!)

check www.vacationexpress.com for quotes for these resorts.

I've gotten some great vacation packages with them. Much cheaper than booking direct.

We went to Aruba 3 years ago and got 7 nights at the Wyndham on Palm Beach with airfare included for $780 per person (for both room and flight) through Vacation Express. Booking it seperate, the airline ticket was $860 alone, not including the hotel.

Note; their prices get much better last minute (within 3-4 weeks of travel)

Thanks Willar for the restaurant tips. I'm going to make note of them. Even though we're doing an AI, our second week there will be our honeymoon week, so it would be nice to go out somewhere nice... and I'm sure the original poster would agree?... what happened to the original poster?? ;)

As for prices.... lalalalala ....I can't even listen to the prices from Eastern Canada anymore. It drives me crazy that they can travel to the Caribbean so much cheaper. So $1000 to the Grand Lido?!!!! My quote there was about $3700 (yes, Canadian) for 1 week. We got a great deal to the Royal Decameron 3 star over New's Year's for $1500. That's about as cheap as Jamaica gets from Western Canada.

To the original poster.........I apologise!!!!

I am an instructor and been teaching and diving in Jamaica for thirty years. I am finding this thread absolutely fascinating.

DiverDebbie - In Negril one of the prettier dive sites is Arches (large swim under overhangs). Look under ledges, lots of fishes are usually there. Also, Gallery use to have some of the nicest soft corals including some ginormous sea fans (should have recovered from hurricane by now). Then there is Kingfish point. The divemasters don't like taking tourists there - deeper, frequent strong currents and divers of questionable abilities, fitness and air consumption. Have fun!!!

Willar - The north coast has even better diving. But diving here is smothered under reggae and ...... Here is where you'll find the walls. The Cayman Trench actually comes pretty close to the northcoast. Some sites plummet down to over 200'. But like everywhere else, you just have to know where to go.

Thanks Reefhugger for the tips. There are 9 certified divers in our group of 16 (and maybe a few more to be certified before then) so maybe if we're the majority , or all of the boat, we can persuade the DM's to take us to those specific sites :)

av8er23:
Thanks everyone for all the information.. I think we have pretty much decided to stay and Couples Negril. I will let you guys know how my experience was once I return.

Look forward to your report. I stayed there last time down and I'm curious as to what has changed.

You lucky son of a gun!!! :)

Don't scare off all the fishes. I'll be at Hedonism II June 8-16 (that's the noisey resort next door where all the crazy fun is!).
