CRANE LAKE, Minn. (Northern News Now) - One person is dead Sunday, after a failed underwater recovery operation on Crane Lake, outside of the Voyageurs National Park boundaries.

According to officials, the 50-year-old man from Embarrass was working with a group of people to recover a piece of sunken machinery in around 70 feet of water.

When the man failed to resurface after a period of time underwater, rescue efforts began.

Those on the scene, along with area first responders were able to transport the victim to shore, however, despite medical efforts he was pronounced dead.

Officials say he was SCUBA certified and was not affiliated with any recovery or salvage company.

The cause of death is under investigation.

The victim’s name is being withheld until family members are notified.

This is an ongoing situation, check back for updates.
