After a rocky, frustrating start to vacation, Jen and Chris with Sailfish Scuba made it all better. We had their small boat booked for my son and I to dive and wife and daughters to snorkel. We were supposed to be at the dock at noon to check in. Plane delays made it so we did not get into Ocean Pointe until about 3:00 am Thursday morning.
So of course everyone was a bear to get out of bed and moving. Just after pulling out of OP driveway and heading for hwy 1 I get stopped by one of Monroe county's finest. AARRRGGGHH. He told me it was my lucky day though due to his printer not working so he did not give me a ticket . This did of course result in us not getting to the shop until almost 1:00.
The wind has been blowing a bit and Jen left it up to us if we wanted to go or not with no penalty if we cancelled. We decided to chance it and hide behind the reef at Grecian Rocks. This would allow the snorkelers to go as well as a nice easy dive for my son and I since I count us as rank amateurs still. The ride out was a little bumpy but not as bad as expected. We did a two tank dive at Grecian. Water was about 77 on surface and 74 at depth. Vis was around 20-30', not the greatest but beats the heck out of being at home shoveling snow! Did not see a huge amount of sea life, but enough to impress us that do not get to see it very often. My son loves arrowhead crabs and Jen was able to find him two to play with and took some great pix while he was doing so. The second was huge, and of course I screwed up my video of it. I forgot my GoPro on the boat for the first dive but did manage to bring it on the second.
Jen was the in-water dive guide and her husband Chris went with the snorkelers. Both were extremely pleasant and great at their jobs. Made all of us feel very comfortable and that is saying something for my wife in the water. Both of them took photos of us divers, snorkelers and scenery. We ended up with a disc of 250+ shots. The in water guide and photos are standard service for them, dives are a little pricier than a big boat but the personal service and photos more than make it an outstanding bargain. I would not hesitate to use them again and anyone wanting a small boat, personal experience would be wise to check them out.
Pete, Jen invited you to stop by their shop and said she would love to get a dive in with you.
