I find that safety stops are a great opportunity to fine-tune my buoyancy and breathing skills. And a great time to completely relax. In calm water, this is one of the best parts of the dive, IMO. Breathe in, rise, breath out, fall. Feel it, Luke. Feel the force. It's all very Zen.
If you pay attention to your gauges and your ears (if you need to clear or they pop, chances are you have changed depth, even if you don't perceive it) and relax, like these fine people are suggesting, you will develop some skills that will make you a better diver.
