We just got back from the Philippines and Palau last week. We were there a several weeks. The first week was spent in Philippines in Manila in Ermita - near the American Embassy where thre was aflag burning one evening. Locals are paid with a smallpittance or a meal to gather. once the benefactor no longer provides these incentives the crowds quickly disperse. Roxas Blvd was fun and entertaining. The people were always willing to laugh - sometimes at you and sometimes with you. Jeepneys galore made the trip adventuresome. After two weeks in Palau, we spent time in Manila again, this time at a luxury hotel for our final night. We discussed the coup attempt with locals and those who worked at the hotel. They were for themost part were for a better economy, not bad politics. They want the curretn administration to succeed so as the economy can grow.
Common sense in your travels - Manila is a big city, but has a lot of wonderful people and amazing things to see and do. We are going back next year but this time diving in Cebu and Bohol.
