It really is "to each his own". I use a sherwood shadow plus intragrated and love it. And yes I have used it, a lot. Sure it breathes harder than my primary, but I have never noticed any problems with the shorter hose giving me problems. In one instance an OOA situation left a diver (not my buddy) about 180 yards from the get out point in a quarry. I gave up my primary, we dropped back down to about 15 feet and did the swim underwater with him on my primary. I was navigator and had not problems figuring out where to go or to maintain my bouyancy.

Point is, while some may like them, others may not. I use one, I also use a 13 cf pony most of the time. My son can't stand the shadow and uses a traditional octo. You need to test and evaluate each piece and see what is best for you. Just my 2psi.

ThatsMe:
.... The local shop sales the octo and the bc intergrated safe second so i dont think theywould be biased to one or the other. But they realy push the safe second, every instructor and employee has the safe second. I would also say that 85% or more of their sales would be the safe second. I guess there are good and bad points of each.

Two words (say them with me now) Profit Margin. Want to bet they make more on the safe second. I don't know, but.....?

scubapro50:
read the thread "new law in Cayman ?" that deals with octos on your rig being required...
How about a link? Using the search function gave me a ton of Cayman results, but nothing on a new law.

What do most people use? At my local shop the push the safe second (reg + bc-inflater combo) over the octo.

In the dive circles I "grew up in", a safe second was synonymous with an octo. Interesting how they are seen as different pieces of equipment here.

Hmm....
