Where is a good place to stay in Saba? Reasonable price, and good location to diving are my main concerns.

All of the diving is done by boat on Saba and they all leave from Fort Bay. There is no accomodation in Fort Bay but the dive shops will normally included pick up and delivery from either your hotel or cottage in the diving cost. Sea Saba is in my opinion the best operator on the island and can sort our accomodation for you as well. The options are either B and B or rent a cottage, several of which have private pools and are very nice.

Feel free to PM me with any further questions you may have

Saba is a very small island, so your choices will be few. I believe the dive ops all provide transportation from the hotels to the dock.

We had a large group and stayed at Juliana's. www.julianas-hotel.com
I can't say enough good things about them--the owners were always available and friendly. I would not hesitate to stay there again.

Enjoy Saba; it's a beautiful island!

Hi,

My favorite place to stay on Saba is at my friends house but if I have to rent a place I would recommend the Cottage Club. If you want a place that is quite and you like cooking for yourself this place is great, we stayed here for a month.
Here's the website: The Cottage Club - Saba - The Dutch West Indies

If you want a place that is louder and has a restaurant then I'd say Scout's Place or Juliana's.
Here's the website for Saba and it should have everything you need to know:Saba - The Official Website of the Saba Tourist Bureau

I would recommend Saba Deep, they have a large boat if they need it and they also have a small boat if they have just a couple of divers, either boat is good.
Here's the website for them: Saba Deep The new owners are making changes to the website so some of it is still under construction.

Hope this help's

Either of the cottages at Juliana's is a great choice. We loved ours and it was very quiet and peaceful. 2 bedrooms (1 for us and 1 for the gear and bags :-) )
My favorite thing about Saba is that we left the door to our cottage wide open everyday to ventilate with no fear of theft. The only visitor was a neighborhood cat that loved to follow us home every night and sit with us until we went to bed and it bid us good night. THE safest place on Earth, imo.

Hi allenwrench,

I spent 3 weeks on Saba in April 2007, staying at Scout's Place and diving with Saba Divers (Saba Divers - Caribbean Diving and Scout's Place Hotel on Saba island : Your all-in-one resort on Saba in the Dutch Caribbean - Saba cottage rental! - Saba Divers und Scout's Place Hotel - Dive Saba, Saba Scuba Diving centre - tauchen und wohnen in d is the link to both). jefsan already explained how the diving works on Saba: You get a ride every morning from Scout's Place in the center of the lovely village of Windwardside to the harbor, can do 2 or even 3 dives per day by boat and get transfered back to the hotel.

I enjoyed Scout's Place a lot, I found especially the restaurant prices to be very reasonable compared to other locations; it was gorgeous to have breakfast overlooking the downward slope of the island and the sea; my room was very nice and clean; they had funny Karaoke events on Fridays that cheered up the whole crowd - small as Saba is, you meet the same people over and over again whereever you go to eat or have some drinks. A place I would definitely recommend.

Diving with Saba Divers was great: I liked their boats (not too big, so you don't go diving with a group of 20), dive briefings and guided tours were excellent; they offer Nitrox without extra charge if you are certified - especially for the "pinnacle" dives this is useful as the reef there starts only below 60ft, so you want to make sure you have some extended bottom time for stunning dives; the only thing you have to do yourself besides diving is to carry, rinse and hang up your wetsuit, everything else gets done by the instructors (they even set up your gear on the boat for you, which I personally don't like and didn't allow because I prefer to do it myself to feel comfortable; one word was enough and they let me do as I please). So also for the dive operation a big thumbs up!

The diving around Saba is very interesting - My favourite sites were Shark Shoal,Tent Reef, Man of War Shoal, Diamond Rock and the "pinnacles". I was deeply impressed of how many sharks I got to see on my dives; I've been to various places in the Caribbean and hardly ever saw sharks.

But if you go to Saba I recommend you reserve some of your time for one or the other really marvelous rain forest hikes you can do there! I saved this for the last day of my trip and would definitely do more if I travel to Saba again: The forests and landscapes you see are amazing, only the hikes are a bit exhausting because of long and steep ascents and descents around the Saba Mountain.

I hope this information helps you a bit, but whatever you do: Never let anyone catch your bubbles!

Greetings from Germany
Andreas

Does anyone have any experience with SeaSaba? Anyone stayed at the Ecolodge? Any comment on sea conditions in early December?

hebrideskid--
A large group of us used SeaSaba last year for a week's worth of diving, and I'd say we were all very pleased with them. Beyond being a dive shop, they assisted with last minute problems with transportation from St. Maarten and lost luggage--certainly not the scope of most dive ops' services, but they were on top of things before some of us knew there were issues.

I can't speak directly for the accomodations at Ecolodge, except to say be extremely aware that they are very low tech.........latrines serve as your bath options, rather than true indoor accommodations. Some find this great, others, less so. It is also a healthy hike UP Mt. Scenery from the rest of the "town", so you'd have to be prepared to deal with that daily. I believe your profile states you like camping; assume the accomodations would be close to that idea, and go from there.

Can't speak for sea conditions at that time of year; maybe call or e-mail and ask the average probabilities. There is a windward and a leeward side of the island, so you'd likely find that you have reasonable dive opportunities regardless of overall conditions.

It is one of the most beautiful, unspoiled places I've seen in all the eastern Caribbean. Go and enjoy. I'll be back someday too.

Thanks so much. I'm in touch with Lynn now at SeaSaba. I'll get her input on accomodations, as well.

Sea Saba is great and Lynn will go out of her way to assist you from now until the time you leave the island. We stayed at Julianna's in one of the cottages. Definitely the way to go. Private, large and very nice.
