I tend to not do very much adjustment to images....but that one could have used a bit of contrast and for those with a normal monitor, a bit lighter.. nice job.

Note: I use a 25 inch, graphic arts viewsonic, so a lot of bright images on this, look much duller on normal monitors

How large are RAW files compared to .jpg's?

Just looking, they seem to run between 9 and 13 meg with the S90..which is something over 500 on an 8 gig card (which is pretty cheap).

I don't bother with the jpeg anymore, as you can make as many as you want later.

I actually use both 16 gig and 8 gig cards...

Keep in mind this is over 100 ft down in the northern gulf of Mexico...so there is not much light getting down here

Yes, I was trying to give it a bit more snap for online viewing. I am finding or actually found long ago that what something looks like on the camera LCD, on a computer screen and in a printer are sometimes significantly different.

I have my monitor matched to my large format printer, but it is much brighter than normal monitors... you did a great job.

Now take that jpeg and make it look like that....

One of the things I find interesting about that image is that there are two kinds of snapper family mixed together in a school. Looking at the original, one cannot tell the pink (we call that a Mingo snapper, but I understand the more common name is vermillion) with the boring lined ones. Do a white balance and they are easy to see, even that deep.

I know we are off subject but I think the OP got answered, sorta.

I pulled that last jpeg photo into PS and analyzed it, there is no red in the jpeg image which would be expected of an ambient light shot taken at 100 feet in the green northern Gulf and therefore nothing to boost or saturate.

Yeah, well, if I were you and I ain't )) I would go to Av mode instead of Program. Av mode is still and Auto mode but it is easier to set the camera up and control it to do what you want it to do rather than what it wants to do.

1. Av mode
2. Camera strobe in Auto unless using an external strobe (do you have external strobe?)
3. Turn Power Saver Off and set the LCD screen to go 1 or 2 minutes. The camera will wake up with a shake or push of a button
4. Assign the front ring control to +/- exposure compensation and set to - 1&1/3.
5. Set your WB to auto, or cloud or fish unless shooting RAW in which case it matters not.
6. Turn of the Safety Focus, Safety Exposure, Red Eye, focus assist light etc
7. Set exposure metering to center weighted
8. Set focus to spot
9. For best IQ I use ISO100 but the S90 can shoot good quality images up to ISO400 and do not hesitate to take advantage of that for ambient light shooting, it is one of the strong points of the S90 vs the G11, the f2.0 lens--use it!

Why Av mode, well, the S90 is a very responsive camera in the Av mode and as well it is good practice for shooting in Manual without giving up the convenience of auto exposure, a twist of the ring control allows you to dial in more or less exposure quickly and easily.

It is a big difference. I have a 4 gig card. It gives me 1472 exposures in the largest resolution JPG. I get 269 in RAW. So RAW takes up a bit over 5 times the space.

But as you noticed, the differences can be dramatic. Perfectly exposed JPEGs are comparable to RAW. But underwater there is enough going on to make perfect exposure pretty tough.
