I have an S500 with the Canon enclosure, Ikelite D125 Strobe and remote slave. If anyone has experience with a similar setup, I would appreciate any advice on basic camera settings to start from, tips particular to this camera etc. I have used it a few times with pretty good success in manual mode, ISO100, AiAF turned off, and the exposure at +0. I am very new to this hobby so please bear with me.

for the basics, have a look at the getting started with the Canon A series thread - the settings suggested apply to pretty much any set up as a start point.

As you have the external strobe, you aren't going to have to worry about really slow shutter speeds. Aiming and controlling your light source are going to be the biggest things - and they will vary will subject and the feeling you want to create.

What types of things are you looking to shoot? The more specific your questions the better we may be able to offer suggestions...

Thanks for the reply. Right now I don't really have any particular type of shots I want to do, I have just been shooting fish and coral from 1-3 feet away. I have had several come out pretty good (IMO) but I am in trial and error mode so not very consistent. Some particular questions:

1) Back scatter seems to be a problem at times, not sure if my strobe alignment is ideal.
2) The case has a diffuser over the internal flash. I have heard that if helps to tape over that when using an external strobe. Thoughts?
3) I have no idea when to use or not use the diffuser for the external strobe
4) In shallow water and sunny conditions, is it better to just use the internal flash?

If there is a good book out there or online course anyone would recommend I would appreciate it.
