Currently I have a S90 and enjoy it very much. I lost a SeaLife 1200 and need to replace it so both my daughter and I have cameras. I have been considering the S100; but also the Sealife 1400 as all of my strobes are Sealife and I really enjoyed the ease of the 1200.

My question is "Is the Canon S100 that much better than the S90, that I should consider the S100 over the SeaLife 1400?"

Just for qualifiers, we are novice photographers and I am just now exploring a Inon Wide Angle Lens and a Dyron Macro on the S90. Before I lost the 1200 I was using the WB with nice results. I do know that one of the major drawbacks to the 1400s is no RAW capability...but I have not shot in that to date so I do not know how much of an inpact that would be for me (plus I still have the S90 for RAWs).

Thanks SB,

~Michael~

I'm also a relatively novice photographer, and I use an S95. It all depends on your goals. Do you see yourself advancing in underwater photography? Or do you see yourself just doing the same type of photography for your entire diving career? If you're exploring wide-angle and macro lenses, it seems that you do want to improve your photos, and shooting in RAW can help.

I mention this because RAW provides a ton of customization in post-production that can make your photos look considerably better. It's not that difficult to use (I'm shooting in RAW, post-processing in Lightroom and/or Photoshop). Also, your Sealife strobes can work with the S100. Plus there are plenty of other options with the S100 that you can't get with the 1400.

Why don't you get a case for the S90? Do you prefer macro subjects? The S100 may not be as good for that. Seach the Forum for the latest. Nemrod has lots of good posts on the s90, s95 and s100 and thier underwater use - it will depend on which case you get.

I have the Canon UW Housing with a 67mm Dyron adapter, Inon WA lens and Dyron Macro lens for the S90. We have been using it for a couple of years and love it. My first underwater camera was the Sealife 600 with a SeaLife SL960 Strobe (round head). On the last dive of a trip in Thailand I failed to properly close the housing door and flooded the camera...DOA back on the boat. To replace the 600 I purchased the SeaLife 1200 with Digital Pro Flash strobe SL961 and video light SL980. On a dive trip in the Persian Gulf while smimming on the surface in choppy water, I lost the 1200.

Since I have two Sealife Strobes and two video lights, I am leaning towards the 1400; I really liked the piano key system of the 1200. But we love the S90 and the S100 is very tempting also.

So back to my original question is the S100 that much better than the S90, that I should get it as oppose to the Sealife 1400?

Thanks SB,

~ME~

Between the S90 and S95 very little difference only the 720p video
The S100 instead is based on a different processor and has HD video and some other quirks the image quality is excellent but the battery life is poor
I don't know much about the Sealife 1400 to comment I guess for me is more about does it offer a fisheye lens?

I am still playing with my S90 but I am wanting a new rig, maybe that new Oly OM-D, not sure. Of course, I am or will soon have the FIX90 housing overhauled so it will be in good shape. I still like the camera and frankly get as good as I ever got with it, for what that is worth. In fact, all said, it is hard to beat for a tiny, packable, easy to use outfit. As to the S100 vs the S90, if video is your thing, S100, otherwise I am still of the mind the S90 is the better camera for use with a variety of lenses. Of course, if you have a specific lens and it works fine with the S100, touché, go for it. The main disadvantage to the S90 is it is no longer made and today I would be more tempted by the Fuji X10 or even a M4:3 format camera of some sort.

Here is a review of the S100. DPReview feels this is a much better camera than the S95.

Canon PowerShot S100 Review: Digital Photography Review

When buying a PnS it is smart to purchase a more current model, as they are not that expensive and often there are some good new features. For UW I would get the S100 for the 24mm lens vs 28mm on the S95.
