Has anybody tried this combo? I want to trigger my DS-125 strobe from my S1 IS. Already have the DS-125, but just want to make it "play" with this camera. In manual mode, of course.

If you use the S1 IS with its onboard flash alone, you get a nasty big shadow in your picture from the housing. The Ike controller looks like it kind of points at the camera housing from the side, allowing its sensor to trigger off of the firing of the camera's onboard flash. But, in order to avoid the shadow problem from the internal flash, wouldn't you need to black out the top front of the housing? If you do that, does the slave sensor still work well?

Or does the side mounted flash totally fill in the shadow?

Anybody have any experience with using this thing with the S1?

p.s. I'm using the Canon WP-DC20 housing.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Susan,

I have an S3IS, Ikelite housing, DS125 strobe and EV controller. The EV controller works great; lots of control. It will fire with our without the Ikelite diffusers. You should have received two diffusers from Ikelite for your housing. Do you have them? It just so happens that a thief in Curacao has my first housing, and I now have two sets of diffusers. If you need diffusers let me know, I'll throw them in the mail to you.

Cheers!
Lou

Great to hear! Thanks.

And thanks for the offer! I actually use the canon housing, which doesn't have diffusers, that I know of, unless I inadvertently tossed them. I believe I will be using "do it yourself" diffusers! :-)

I have used the EV manual controller with a DS-125 and a Canon housing for the S500 and had no complaints. My housing had the diffuser which I used all the time, although as you stated it looks like your housing does not have a diffuser. Anyway, I went to a DSLR camera and housing now, if you want an EV controller cheap PM me.

You are correct as to how the EV controller works.

The others are also correct that you do need the diffuser for it to work the best.

Finally, you are correct, a diffuser came with the case and it has run away, so you will need to create your own diffuser.

Maybe electrical tape over the flash? The EV controller will be able to see behind it if you mount it and point it correctly.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the replies everybody!

Txdano, dang it, I just ordered the controller. :-) Someone also posted a used one at wetpixel yesterday too. I guess I could return the new one, and get a used one from one of you, but the shop (Ryan at Reefphoto) has been nice to me, so I don't think I should return it now. Rats.

Thanks for the input on there originally existing a diffuser - I have the original box still, maybe I just chucked it in there and forgot about it. Otherwise, yes, maybe electrical tape would work, or something like that. I could even mount a little mirror on there to make sure lots of flash bounced out the right direction. :-) Contruction is fun!

I'm also making a wet mount 67mm magic filter for it . . . that will be fun too.
