I have a S 70 and would like to use it in the shady kelp forest where dive. What would be a good set up for this camera? Housing ? Strobe? Or even if I should consider a different camera ?

You should be fine with the Canon housing - you might also want to check out Ikelite, though not sure they offer a housing for this camera.

I would buy a WA lens (Inon are excellent) for kelp. You want to get close and have a wide view. A WA lens will also let you do close focus wide angle so you can get some dramatic shots that way, too.

If you aren't sure on a strobe, start with natural light and experiment. When you are really close you can use your internal flash for fill and natural light for the main area of the frame. Kelp offers some very interesting lighting scenarios so not only is there the potential for incredible shots...it's also ever changing so very difficult! LOL You're going to have tons of fun!

Once you choose a strobe (I love my Inon...Ike 125s are also incredible) you'll have even more options for your shots.

Good luck and happy shopping!

You should try out the canon housing for the S70 - which is the WP-DC40. Before you get any lenses or buy a strobe... try the camera by itself. It has a fairly wide angle lens at 28mm, you can use the marco mode if you need to for close-ups, and the built in flash works nicely too by itself. If you find that you're not getting enough light for the camera by itself, the Ikelite DS-125 can work with this camera and it's pre-flash (in P mode) or no-pre-flash mode in Manual.

Most of the photos in my gallery are with the S70 without an external strobe.

Ciao Erik Il Rosso

Those look nice. Did you end up using your manual WB setup? or are those photos just plain un-adjusted?

Thanks for the tips. I will take your advise and just start out with the WP-DC40. Also , thanks for sharing those great photos.-----------Ron

They are just plain un-adjusted...

I only played a bit with the WB using ZoomBrowser...

I am starting to discover that for macro shots with clear water the S70 and its housing let me take very good pics without too much trouble...

Christmas is coming, I am starting to think about buying an external strobe...

Ciao Erik Il Rosso

P.S. Do you really like the pics taken in the Mediterranean Sea or were you talking about the ones taken in Sulawesi (Walea) ???

Erik. I liked the ones that aren't in the album... the anenome fish, etc. The looked nice.

Before you buy a strobe, see if you can borrow one just to try it... We've found that the strobe sheds almost too much light on the subject matter.
