I was teaching DPV's (Diver propulsion vehicles-Scooters)
the other day when I came across another Instructor and 6 or so students at 11m (35ft). I purposely kept my distance because I didn't want to freak the students out but as I went past them with my student the Instructor leading the group gave me the finger and then the w##ker sign with his fist?!

I was really taken aback but ignored him and kept on going and eventually exited the dive with my student who also commented about the rudeness of the act.

When the other Instructor surfaced I approached him and took him to the side so his students couldn't hear and asked:"What the hell was that about"? He said that anyone riding a scooter underwater deserved that kind of treatment as they were obviously not serious about diving and had more money than sense?!

I won't tell you my reply but it nearly came to blows and in the end he apologised. Has anyone else out there experienced anything like that?

It surprises me that this particular instructor had the immaturity to act with impulse. Then again, it really does not surprise me...one can find a**holes eveywhere you go. As an instructor he ought to know that other instructors teach other aspects of scuba.

he was trying to look "cool" in front of his students and completely overlooked
the fact that you are a person too... you became a prop in his "look cool movie"

i hate "look cool movies"

come to think of it, i hate all "movies" people act out that reduce other people to
props

this post made sense when i started typing

I have often thought of having a DPV experience when in Thailand. Are they particularly looked down upon by certain segments of the dive community?

Not in my experience. They are a useful tool, whether for exploring larger wrecks or caves.

Two of my buddies just took delivery on short body Gavins. They move far more quickly than would otherwise be possible and use much less gas because they are not working at all to move through the water. They are powerful enough to move two divers in doubles and stages without any problem.

I'm looking forward to picking one up, probably by next year.

I've used Apollos while vacationing in the Caymans. We motored from the beach to about 250 yards offshore in 20 fsw to a wall, clipped the scooters off to our rigs, descended down to explore the wall, then scootered back while doing our stops. While we could have done this dive without scooters, it was much more fun and lasted much longer than it would have without them.

The instructor who made those statement is unprofessional and ignorant. He obviously should stick to simple puddle dives in 20 fsw instead of bothering to learn anything.

We have a couple of sites we dive that would not be possible without a DPV. They are right in the Ferry Lanes while they head for their landings. So the entire 2 mile trip has to be done submerged each way. It's cool when they pass over. Kind of like being in a giant vibrating drum being beat with sledge hammers.

Try it by boat and it won't be there when you get back. It will be where you just came from. :11:

I dive in Thailand and have used DPVs for a couple of dives. They are good if your drop off point and target are a long way away. They are also good if your dive starts into a currrent for some reason.

PADI has a specialty course for the DPV.

They aren't so good when they break down.

In caves you start going on rule of 6ths or worse when you use then for example.
