Two of us from Maryland will be on this same cruise (12/16, Legend of the Seas). We'll be diving in every port (at least that's the intent) and after doing some research, the plan so far is:

Cayman: we'll be going with http://www.diversdown.net and probably doing an afternoon two-tank dive which will offer plenty of time to return to ship. I plan to contact them by e-mail during the next couple days. Divers Down comes highly recommended from the place I got my OW "ground school" in Washington, DC (http://www.scubaedu.com) which runs monthly cert trips to Cayman. Not interested in Stingray City (a tourist trap) for this trip; maybe some day, but not while on a cruise. Would rather do wall diving in Cayman.

Belize: sticking with the Royal Caribbean shore excursion for this port. A previous tip on this board led me to that conclusion...basically the time in port vs. distance to dive locations is the factor to consider. In Belize, the dive operator picks up the cruise passengers right at the ship, so you don't have to go to shore by tender.

Cozumel: haven't decided yet...too many choices and options, and with the cruise ship in port until 11pm, plenty to think about. Last year, we walked into town on a whim while on another Royal Caribbean cruise and found Scuba Staff Divers (http://www.scubastaffdivers.net), a small shop located on one of the back streets. We did their Intro to Scuba course (which they conducted basically as a two-tank dive), and we're now hooked on diving. They have boats outside of town, and use local taxis (they cover the cost) to transport you to and from the docks. I think a night dive in Cozumel would be worthwhile and very unique, and am going to research that a bit more to make sure to find a good operator. It's important to have a real good operator/divemaster for a night dive or things can get dicy fast with the currents. I did a night dive up the road in Cancun and it was not pleasant...it should have been done as a drift dive, but the divemaster had us fighting a very strong current the entire time, it was a shallow (40 ft) reef used heavily for OW certification and novice dives (i.e., very battered and bruised), and there was a lot of surge...enough to preclude any real photography. I don't want to repeat that maladventure in Cozumel.

Mahahaul/Costa Maya: havn't decided yet. This "town" is pretty interesting...it's just a seafront strip of a handful of small shops and outdoor makeshift bars...a real Corona commercial set. It's only a couple miles from the artificial Mexican theme village they created for the cruise ships (quite pathetic). I was hearing cautiously good things about Blue Ocean Safari, but a recent post on this board (just search for that name) was not encouraging. Another post was pretty good. There only seem to be three operators there. More research needed. Maybe will forego this port and just swim or snorkel.

A Must Do: Cruise Critic has "Roll Calls" (discussion threads) for each ship and sailing date; there's a thread for Legend of the Seas 12/16 trip. There's something called "Meet and Mingles." It's a way to get to know people before the cruise, and if they get 25 people (they have 22 signed up), Royal Caribbean will host a party for the group. Definitely sign up and keep in touch.

NovaAgent: definitely check the Cruise Critic roll call board for your cruise at http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=203365 There are several divers on here. We've got our plans pretty much nailed down, and in the most recent posts on the above site, you'll find that info. Looking to see if anyone wants to join forces in Cozumel especially...hope to see you all soon...15 days to departure!

Thanks to all for the info. Flyhimd - I just sent an e-mail to BlueXTSea to check whether they have any afternoon dives available the day we're in Cozumel. Have you set all your reservations up yet? We also booked a dive trip in Grand Cayman but did it through the cruise line as I wasn't sure about whether there was enough time to head out independently.

I did GC with Royal Carib. a couple years ago and went with their excursion. I thought they were great and it wasn't a cattle boat. If I went back again I would probably choose another dive operation but there is always the risk of something happening and you missing the boat. If the excursion is through RC, then they will wait on you or have heard they make arrangements to get you to the next port by the time the boat arrives. My cruise left out of NJ and was a long cruise and won't ever do that one again because of too many travel days but sounds like you have a great itinerary.

Was in Cozumel and Grand Cayman this past summer. Dove in GC with neptunesdivers and they were great. Have dove with them a couple of times in the past, you can't go wrong diving with them. Dove with Papahogs several times in Cozumel in the past and have always had a great experience. Take into account your experience because in Cozumel you will almost always have to deal with current.

Food for thought. I was never one to want to cruise until my wife insisted. Since then we've gone six or seven times, always diving at selected ports. Cozumel always gets the nod because the diving is near the top worldwide. It is easy to dive independently and still get back to the ship on time. Try Pappa Hogs Scuba Emporium. Mike and Margaret, the owners are great and it is not far from the pier. They use small boats and they have taken just three of us before just to accomodate. The experience in Belize is great. For about $ 130 or so, you can fly a Cessna Caravan to San Pedro, dive, and fly back to Belize City in time to catch the ship. It's worth every penny then some. Just the scenery from the flight is worth the price of admission. I've done this twice, making the arrangements from the port.

I just got back from this cruise. The best dives I had was the Cenote dives in Coz. I dove the other ports also (GC, Belize, and Costa Maya), but the Cenotes were the best. I also enjoyed the diving in Costa Maya (the reefs looked undisturbed). I used the ship excursion at each port, and that actually worked out best as when we arrived in GC the wind was so bad they had to anchor on the opposite of the island and the people who were going to arrange their own dives couldn't in time, but our op was waiting on the dock. The cost was a little more (OK maybe quite a bit more) but it was worth it to be sure that the boat didn't leave without us (they can't leave until all the ship provided shore excursions are back). We had to take tender boats at all ports except Costa Maya, which is a concern if you are taking your own gear, have a gear bag with wheels or you will be hauling your gear a lot and up and down the narrow stairs leading to the tender boat is a PAIN......... Have fun and great diving....

If you want to do a beautiful dive for about $10 per person in Grand Cayman here's my .02 cents. When you get off the boat grab a cab or walk south to Don Fosters. It's about a 10 minute walk past the Eden Roc dive shop and PLEASE don't go to Eden Roc because they generally very busy and some times VERY rude. Go to Fosters and they will set you up for a shore dive with an easy entry from the back of their shop. When you are at the dive shop tell them to instruct you how to get to Devils Grotto when you get in the water but here mine to try and be helpful... When you get in the water you swim north about 50-80 yards to a bouy and drop down to a world of huge caves, swim thoughs and coral.
I lived on Cayman for a year and never got tired of this dive.
