I've never had one, but I believe every word you say. There are few things in life that terrify me and Dentists are right up there at the top of the list.

A good one helps though. Just think, the hard part's done and now comes fun...

Good advice, to have the root canal done asap for medical expediency's sake...

I'm not sure how it would have reacted in a dive, unless it was cracked, where it could trap air in a reverse squeeze on ascent...

(Wanna talk about pain??? I've been there... Considered drowning instead of continuing the ascent) :light:

I would say that it would hurt a lot. I once had a front tooth that needed a root canal and it hurt just to feel the air moving across it when I opened my mouth - mega painful! I would think that the pressure changes both in the plane and under the water would be awful. It hurts ro even think about it - ouch!

Thanks everyone. Had it to at noon home now. But s*%& that hurts, well next plan is diving in Lake Powell. Thanks for everyones input and help. On the road to recovery.
I know its been a while but did you dive while the root canal was in process, or not until after it was completed? Any comments? I have one that was started yesterday, and am due to dive on Saturday.

I dove a day after i left the dentist with one in progress. He did the canal and put in the temp filling. The next day i was in the water at 9 am. I have also dove with one that the dentist didn't have time to do the whole thing, it abcessed really bad and i had to get rid of the infection before he would work. He drilled into it and let the fluid escape that was causing the pain put in a temp filling with meds under it and put me on antibiotices and advil. I dove the next day and it was a little uncomfortable but tollerable. What i did was put the reg in my mouth before the dive and see how uncomfortable it was gonna be.

aFTER THE FIRST VISIT OF CLEANING AND RELEAVING PRESSURE I WAS FINE TO DIVE, NO COMPLICATIONS

Thank you for the info. Was yours packed with cotton or the soft cement?

I guess the same question. Was it cotton packed or soft cement?

You know, we must be a crazy bunch. Who else would risk tooth implosion just because the viz is looking like it will be great this weekend?

The first one it was totally drilled out and packed with a cotton peg soaked with a medication and then cemented over with a sofe cement. After a couple weeks when all the pain was gone he put in a regular filling.

The second one he drilled just enough to let the puss out of the abcess. I was in such pain i cannot describe. only constant ice relieved the pressure. When he drilled through it was instant relief. He then put the medicine on and let it soak in for a few minutes then put in the soft cement filling. I was then put on antibiotics and advil. He had to pull the temp filling the next day as the pressure was back.

On both of these he told me i could dive after the novacain wore off.

Thank you!
