Hey there,

Just thought I'd ask who all is heading down to Cozumel in September? I'm heading down from Toronto on the 6th and unfortunately returning to Toronto on the 20th.. Staying at a Bed and breakfast (Alicia's B&B, same as my last trip) and diving with "Dive with Martin". I know there are one or two other people on the board with overlapping holidays.. Be nice to meet you folks if you're so inclined.

I'm looking forward to the diving of course, and I am also looking forward to Independance day, Tulum and the Cenotes...

Cheers,

Lanshark

Lanshark,

We(wife and I) will be at Caribe Blu from the 10th to the 21st, diving with Deep Blue and maybe others. Other than diving and el otro lado a few times, planning on going over to Coba for a day. Always up for a meeting for a cold cerveza sometime. Let me know when and where.

Lanshark,

Will miss you as I do not get down there till the 28th. It'll be my first trip both to Mexico and to Coz, so am very excited. How easy is it to get to Tulum from Coz? Have heard the ruins are almost as nice as Chichen Itza which is probably too far for a day trip.

Also, what is this about Independence Day? When is it and does it make Coz unbearably crowded?

Ta!

I will be there the 23-27th , yay!

landshark,
we're headed down on the 3rd thru 1tth as we talked about earlier, have set up our dives with Martin also, hope to see you when we get there!

Hey Voln,

If you haven't been to Chichen Itza, go there before you go to Tulum or save Tulum for the next trip. It's worth the day trip. assume the heat will be fairly oppressive, so drink lots of water...

Tulum is much smaller but on the ocean, so you can apparantly go snorkelling after visiting the ruins to cool off.

When I travel, I typically travel independantly (no tour operators) and I don't go All-Inclusive anymore.

To get to Coz,

Fly on cramped charter aircraft from Toronto
Arrive at Cancun Airport
Pray to the luggage diety for both Scuba gear and Clothes bags to magically appear, I can however live without the Clothes bag...
Expect Green light at customs... Don't panic if I get a red light...
Lie (if necessary) to timeshare people in the arrivals lounge that I already own a house in Coz....
Riviera Bus to Playa Del Carmen
Tricycle taxi (carries luggage and me) to ferry pier
Ferry to Cozumel
Taxi to Hotel (Cost less than $25.00 US total (excluding airfare) takes basically the same amount of time.

To Get to Tulum You can just grab a bus from Playa Del Carmen, you can of course take a tour but it will be more expensive and you can't really go at your own pace. I think travel time is somewhere around 1 hour to Tulum, 3 hours or so to Chichen itza, but I stress that it is worth the day trip.

I'm not sure if there is bus only service to Chichen itza. I did the tourist thing on my first trip to Mexico in 97.

I am looking forward to independance day, Its the 16th, but they celebrate the night of the 15th into the wee hours of the morning. Should be quite the party.

I love Mexico and the Mexican people, and adapt to the culture and customs during my stay (as I do with any country I visit). The cruiseships should leave by 8:00pm, so I expect it will be very non-touristy... somewhat like carnival.

I'm still kicking myself for not visiting the circus when it was in Cozumel on my last trip. Apparently they didn't have enough money to leave the Island so they stayed for a week or two more than they planned in January 2003. That would have been something to see.

Cheers,

Lanshark

I look forward to it. Based on the dive reports I've seen we're in for a bit of a roller-coaster ride with the currents... Whatever doesn't kill you, just isn't trying hard enough....

Smile,

Lanshark

Coolio! Thanks for the tips - I have an extra day so I may go to Chichen Itza after all!

Wishing you a good trip! V.

You can fly to Chichen Itza from Cozumel airport as well- costs a bit more but takes less time obviously- we thought it was worth it when we were on a 4 day trip.

The flights to Chtizen Itza have been terminated apparently due to the high acident rate according to an Aeroferinco rep.

The only way to get there now is to drive or take a tour bus. Both are very long trips and not the most pleasant unfortunately.

If you are going to do it, I recommend going the night before and stay the night at the Mayaland Hotel, right next to Chitzen Itza. Get up early, have a nice breakfast and do the tour before all the crowds get there. You'll have the place to yourself pretty much until about noon or so, then you can start heading back to the island.

Have fun!
