Big fan of the ruggedness of DUI Rock Boots but needing a half-size and lack of true help from DUI in getting the right size ("Buy one of each and return the ones that don't work") didn't leave me with satisfactory results.
So, I decided to go the Chuck Taylor route. Though the Chuck Taylors seemed a good idea, finding one at a reasonable price and the right size was problematic. Enter Lugz Stagger high tops. They are a CT knock off, for sure, but they were priced right, under $50, and they were available in half-sizes.
Ordered up a pair through that outfit named after a South American river and right out of the box it was clear these would be a winner. Available in a bunch of colors, light weight, fairly well built, and a stand alone brand with its own web presence, there is little to initially fret over.
For fit, I went with one size over my regular street shoe and when I pulled them on over my neoprene socks it went perfect. About the only issue is that to lace them to the top one needs far too much lace to allow the shoe to open enough along the tongue to be reasonable. Consequently I skipped the top two sets of eyelets for lacing but the boot still felt solid when tied.
Though the tread is not at all as aggressive like the DUI boots, it is still more than adequate for walking to and from the water. Haven't tried them on a rocky shore yet so perhaps the basketball court tread may be problematic.
Only have an initial dive on them so I'll be back with more feedback for you.
Meanwhile, even if they end up being a bust, or wearing out too soon, the low price, and out of the box success makes these a great rock boot.
They can be bought direct from Lugz, but can be found cheaper through other vendors
