Hey All -

I just booked my plane flight for the 21st to the 28th. Now I have to figure out where I'm staying.

I'm traveling with my girlfriend who needs to do her 4 open water dives, but I am an experienced diver so I'm not sure where to stay. Not sure if I should look at an all-inclusive or not because of her situation. She wants to do some other than diving activities as well.

I was thinking of staying near West Bay or End. I found a really good deal at Infinity Bay. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

Thanks for the recommendations. I think she wants a place with a pool unless the resort beach is really nice. The only other important things are ac and a minifridge or bigger fridge.

I know that if the place is small then she wants to be within walking or short taxi to bars/restaurants. We had a costa rica trip not too long ago where we were in a fairly secluded resort for a few nights and she didn't like that we were the only people at the bar and pool, I kind of agreed with her especially when the bar tender wasn't there either. So trying not to repeat that or an all-inclusive where the food is bad. I guess I can look into a dive package for me and maybe a cert package for her. I know she is not going to want to dive everyday, or at least that's what she says now.

Any other ideas are greatly appreciated

Infinity Bay is having a 50% off sale right now, and its one of the nicest condo units/resorts on the island. You can do your diving with any of the Dive Shops in West bay or West End. Its also right on the nicest beach on the island with a beautiful pool.

I think you should consider the West End guest houses and utilizing the related day-dive ops. A well explained zone here on SCUBA Board. There are some with pools. Your dive schedule might be limited to three tanks in a day, and that might be kind of a bit of effort. You have to factor in time to get meals as well as transit time between your room and the pier. Some places? It's pretty easy to do 3x and have some time to relax. If you closely examine the boat schedule of some others, you might have to be happy with 2x day. Night dives are usually once-a-week if there is enough interest.

There aren't many "big" places on Roatan, likely none of them would have enough diversions that she might like that would be better than being near the West End and its many diversions. There is one notable Dive Resort AI, where you could get the ease and low cost of a lot of dives, but she would enjoy the pool, the room fridges, plus being a short cab ride to the nightlife of the West End. That would be Anthony's Key Resort (AKR). This is a dive resort, first and foremost, so you can count on a lot of diving, including all of the night dives you may want.

Mixing your desire for a lot of diving and her wishes taken into account, a choice of an AI makes the most sense. Close proximity of your room to the dive operation, an operation that does multiple tank boat trips, easy access to breakfast and lunch. You can always go to the West End's many interesting restaurants for evening fun.

Infinity Bay (IB) is a resort that offers diving. The difference between IB and AKR may be easily settled by her wishes. It is very much so a glossier product, versus more of an Island Dive Resort experience at AKR. The romance of one of AKR's rooms on the Key is hard to surpass, however.

If Momma aint happy aint nobody happy.

I booked the flights so quickly and never even thought about not having a "buddy" if I book an all-inclusive resort like AKR and want to do shore dives while girlfriend is doing girl stuff. I'm assuming they are pretty strict.? Does anyone know how they operate shore dives? Also is there a nice beach at AKR and how far from West End

Thanks

2-2-1/2 miles? It's a little longer drive than it sounds as AKR is in it's own compound so you drive out to the main road which twists/turns slightly inland on the way to the West End. It's probably just over 2 miles to the middle of Half Moon Bay which is sort of the start of the West End. Another mile and a half or so to West Bay from there. $2-8 from AKR depending on how far west you go.

There's a beach at AKR on the Key but from what I understand it's not much. Most of the cabanas are on ironshore perched over the water. Not a very good picture - not sure if this is the whole beach either - I've been to AKR (did the Dolphin Dive) but not out to the Key - you have to be a guest to go out there afaik. I think you are best staying on West Bay Beach to please the girlfriend. Its the nicest beach on the island, and is a short hop on the water taxi ($3.00 pp one way) to get to West End where there are lots of Dive Shops, restaurants, bars, etc. Don't worry about getting a dive buddy, the dive shops will take care of you and there are often people just like you with a non-diving spouse. AKR is very nice is a bit too far out of the action to please the girlfriend IMO.
Here is a map of where things are on the island and AKR is near Sandy Bay. Island Map | Luna Beach Dive Resort

Hi Tom,
Look at this website and read the testimonials. It's a super place to stay for the rates and the staff are great. They can connect you with all sorts of places to go and do and if you don't want to go anywhere you don't need to as it's a great place to hang out.
