We are advanced divers with over 500 dives under our weight belts. It appears that the normal policies are group dives led by a guide. We are trying to figure out if anywhere allows divers, with a buddy, to dive their own profile, and not stick to the group. If not, Roatan is not our place. Appreciate anyone who can chime in. Thank you

Cocoview has no regulations about this. Dive solo if you want. I’ve done at least 30 solo dives there. No one will hassle you.

Reefhouse near the east end used to let me have plenty of rope too. I have not been there in awhile, it (well, the resort bar) turned into a party place for expats. Good laid back diving at that end, a shame really.

Coco view, now my a Roatan go to, rocks. First timers must complete an orientation dive. Afterwards, shore diving 24/7 is available as long as conditions allow. And as stated above solo diving is just… diving. DMs on the boats might want to size you up before you “wander” from the group but when I give them a heads up I may do that, Ok Mr Kevin!

At one point West End divers allowed you to charter a boat. It depended on the time of the year and staff availability but basically you could do whatever dives you wanted. We have done it a couple of times over the years. It was definitely more expensive but not too much more. I’d suggest reaching out to them to see if they still would do it.

Consider the less developed neighboring island of Utila (50 mins by ferry or a 10 min charter flight from Roatan) and diving with "We-Dive Utila".
They only take out 4-7 divers at a time and never seem to have students onboard, they have always allowed my wife and I to dive our own profiles. Anke the owner/instructor has been leading dives around Utila for nearly 20 years and is top notch, plus they dive unmarked reefs and sea mounts that the other Utila operations don't go to, so we rarely see other boats.
We stay in a lovely rental house on Treasure Beach called The Coral House, it has its own dock and We-Dive Utila picks us up and drops us off at the dock each day.
