Hey everyone im going to riviera maya at the dreams in tulum in late may, wondering if anyone knew about spearing down there or could recommend a good dive shop that would take me out to some more advanced dive spots (not the ones they take the first timers)?

There's a little shop in Puerto Morales (Dive Puerto Morales) owned by a guy from Utah - good shop and very small groups, so you should be able to get the kind of dive you're looking for. Hope this helps - good luck and dive safe.

thanks for the help, i see alot of dive shops but i still really want to spear down there

We stayed at Dreams just over a year ago now. The shop there - Maya Diving - turned me on to scuba and I had a great time with them. Apparently they have a web site now - MAYA DIVING - and some contact info there. Don't know if you've done Dreams Tulum before but there isn't anything around there and Tulum is about 5-8mins cab ride. It's also a LONG ass walk to the road from the front part of the hotel.

That's a long haul from Tulum (I'd say close to an hour)

I'm not sure about the rules on spearing. I'd check it out before dragging my speaking gear down there.

In PM, not a chance of spearing, the whole area is a national marine park. Let me know which shops along the coast will take you spearing and where they will be taking you.

well i checked out the website for Dive Puerto Morales and it says they have spearing down there, so ill email them today and find out whats the deal

The dive shop at Dreams is Maya Diving and is run by Tim Day. They are a great group to dive with, but I wouldn't bring up spear fishing. Tim and his staff want to support the reef and are working to get it designated protected. Here is Maya Divings Blog, it is a a good sounding board for different issues and thoughts.

From what I have been told, (by a well known fisherman on Isla Mujeres) it is ilegal to spear fish Cancun south on the peninsula, but some Mexican fishermen have been ceded the rights by the Gov. It is illegal for extranjeros too spear just as it is illegal for extranjeros to harvest lobster. It is an industry on the Yucatan, to help support Mexicans. Now maybe this is isn't the real skinny, but I trust those who told me.

After diving down there for several years I have noticed a significant decrease in the fish population, so I try to leave nothing but bubbles and take nothing but photos.

Get a hold of dirk at divemex tell him what you want tip divemasters and prove your an experience diver and they will take you on some great dives.
