I have never dove a dry suit so I suspect a black water river is not the place to learn, so no thanks. I am sure the river warms up enough in the summer, anything above 65 or so is fine. Dark and snakes I can deal with but cold is just not fun to me and this is susposed to be fun. I would be happy to boat sit until the water warms up some, you need surface support anyway. I also would like to give White Lake a try, I understand that it might be a reasonable place to dive.

I didn't know we could scuba @ white lake.
Only snorkle. Awsome!

Hey give a an e mail so we can get together sometime.
I too live in the Capital city.

see ya

You can PM me from here.
Are you a member of Gypsy or Down Under? I frequent both.
As for White Lake, I am assuming you can dive it. There is a public boat ramp and I know of no laws that would stop us. I have not idea if there is anything worth seeing but it is an iceage lake from what I understand so there may be something worth hunting for in it.

Ya, I went diving at Fantacy Lake on the 1st
Met Gypsy, and Down Under group.
As far as travel with them I haven't.
I go to the quarry as often as I can to hone some of my skills.
I'll PM with my numbers
Thanks

groovhog,
I've got a drysuit, so I'm game for a dive. Have you dove the Lumber very much? Whaddya see? I've scouted out the bridge/boat landing at Pembroke a couple times, I think there would be plenty of contraband under that bridge, knowing the area (my home, no offense to the locals).

I may actually be visiting a customer in Fayettenam myself during that time, so this may happen.

Herman,
Good call on the drysuit. I just started diving one, and it does take a couple dives to get your buoancy respectable. Of course in a river you're probably going to anchor to the bottom, but light feet could get your heart going.

Lake Waccamaw might also be a decent dive. The water is pretty clear like White Lake. Anyone know why the water is so clear there, compared to the very ugly water in nearby ponds/lakes. Maybe it's that glaciel thing. Maybe there's a cave down there! One can dream.

Looking forward to diving the Lumber for sure.

I did some internet searches on White Lake and found some info. It is spring fed and has a sand bottom which is the reason it's clear. I am guessing but the area around the feed spring may make an interesting dive. The local town laws are a little confusing but I think I understand what they mean....just hope the cops do. They state that "DIVING" is unlawful by town ord but then in another section state that "Skin Diving" is leagal with a flag.. Way I see this is - jumping off a dock is unlawful , scuba is OK. In any case, it's got to warm up some for me to get in.

GH, got your phone number, maybe we can meet at the next DU meeting which should be Feb 10.

Is it possible to locate the feed spring? Does anyone know where it is? I used to go swimming there when I was a kid, but haven't thought about going diving there. I'd definitely be up for a dive there. I don't imagine it's seen much diving. As far as police, I think if you're diving from a boat noone would know or care. Beer drinking skiers would be biggest concern during summer.

Spring fed with a sand bottom.....that feeds the karst loving imagination doesn't it.

Somebody's going to move this thread before long.......Maybe if we talk about caves we won't have to move it.

The NC Dept of Environment Health and Natural Resources (Division of Land Resources) Published a Bulletin #89 Fossil Collecting in NC in 1988. It gives the location for many of the known fossil beds in Central to Eastern NC. I don't know the url but im sure its available off their website. or you guys in the Raleigh area could probably get a copy directly from their office.
Happy Hunting!
John

Thank JC
