Generally they are really good for low-skill documentation imaging. Art photographers are more likely to find them limiting. We used them a lot for commercial divers documenting corrosion and cracks on steel platforms.

Actually, I think that ring flashes are extensively used by the fashion shooters, beautiful light and spectacular catch lights.
I seldom shoot the ring flash by itself, although I use it for the main light on a subject; I often add a little strobe power to generate some shadows.

The Hong Kong housing maker sea frog just came out with a ring light /flash called SL108 it is quite cheap for what it offers, I am considering getting it for my TG4 for macro have a look at the following link :
