I see many types and strenghts of line being sold, as well as references to 'cave' line. Curious about what divers suggest for different situations?

Nylon, never polypropylene (floats), very very rarely polyester.

The default is #24 braided for reels and spools. #24 does double duty for tying stuff like boltsnaps to lights and spgs, etc. #36 is rarely used in caves, its a typical wreck diameter tho.

In certain cave exploration situations (where you want to fit more on the reel) #18 nylon is used. "Gold line" is put in high traffic caves later, its much fatter ~2.5mm parachute cord.

To add to Rjack's description above, the reason for the heavier "wreck" line is because it tends to take more abrasion by rusted steel, etc. typically found in wrecks.
