Hi guys, I'm new to this section of the board. I'll be going on my 1st rig spearfishing trip in 4 weeks and was wondering if there are any sugestions or tips that you could offer a new fish slayer.

Keep a wary eye on your depth and gas supply, especially when the action starts.

I'll be going out on the 24th on Mike McGleenys boat. There will be 6 of us, I don't think any of them are SB members. As far as I know, I'm the only newbie (fresh meat). Last (and only) time I speared a fish I was about 13 yrs old and free diving with a pole spear in CA! Now I have JBL sawed off magnum that I think I'll fit with an extra band for a little exra added ZING. Looking forward to getting out of lake Travis and seeing some blue water again. Plan is to go out 30 or 40 miles to a deep water rig.
I'll see about renting or borrowing a camera.

Wear at least jeans and a long-sleeve shirt and gloves. The rigs are covered with barnacles. Stay inside the rig. Swim to the rig on the surface. I suggest making your first rig dive WITHOUT the speargun. Kepp the rig in sight at all times.

I was planning on wearing my 5mm wet suit. I know it's warm water, but I get cold easily. I don't know, but a rig shouldn't tear it up any worse than the SCal rocks I'm a thinking.
P.S. Nice pic on your profile page Rig Diver.

Whoa, that is a great picture!

Shaggie;
I will suggest if you are wearing a wetsuit and spearfishing on the rigs to wear some heavy cotton coveralls over the wetsuit. The barnacles on the rig are worse than the SC rocks. What you want to do to conserve air is to sit on a horizontal pipe and wrap your legs around it. Wait on the fish to come to you. Chasing them does not work. It also uses up a lot of air. They can sense your every move. Load your gun between the boat and the rig. Have it ready at all times. Now, lets say you shoot a snapper and feel you really made a good shot: stay with your legs wrapped around the rig and just pull it to you. I like to rip the gills out to kill it fast, then put on stringer, and then remove spear. Amazing how many people loose fish because they took em off the spear before putting them on the stringer. Now, lets say you shoot an Amberjack, Ling/cobia, or other bigger fish: Get off the pipe and follow it, not putting pressure on it or the line. The best handle is the gills. Again, I like to rip out the gills.
Check out rigdivers gallery on www.zendiving.com There are a couple of big fish piccys.
Stay safe;
Bill
