Hi,

I would like to get a medical advise how I should behave.

I suffered from a "light" pneumonia. In this context "light" means, that the doctor said she can see traces, but cannot state if it is starting to develop or already healing. At least the signs or not showing severe impact on my lung. For diagnosis: One could hear sounds from my lung even after coughing- I got a chest x-ray (there were some "stripes" seen), a lung function test and blood work. Blood work was generally ok with some small traces of an infection. I got antibiotics and some inhaler medical. I have to say, that I already coughed for two weeks when I recieved this diagnosis and it felt worse before I went to the doctor. When this started about 17 days earlier, initially my lung was considered to be OK. Because I got worse I went again to see the doctor. It is not clear if it was a bacterial or viral infection. This diagnosis of pneumonia had been on November 25th.

Of course I stopped diving! Talking to Aquamed I was suggested to wait for complete stop of symptoms and feeling good again. Then get blood work and a second lung function test to confirm diving is OK. The doctor, who is not specialised in diving, did say the same. Another chest x-ray would not be useful as one even on a CT could probably see small effects month afterwards, but they are not a problem for diving. I just should make slow and easy dives, preferably in warm water: Problem is that the expanded gas cools down significantly, which could restart a residual infection. Timewise and how my symptoms evolved they said probably the test will be good and it is to be on the safe side before this vacation.

My plan was originally to get these tests last week and try in a pool on last Sunday. However I did not quiet feel comfortable for it last week, so planend to do it right this week. While considering my fitness level, and overall health measured by my Oura ring, was already good on December 4th, I still had occasional mucus and my ears did not clear last week. Now I think its overal fine.

Now my "problem": On Sunday we are leaving for egypt. Unfortunately I could not make an appointment with a doctor before it (well my fault I waited too long), only after the vaccation. So I am unsure if I should do scuba diving there or better leave it out for health reasons. I consider to testbreath in my bath tub, so my wife looking after me and holding the tank outside the tub and I just breath for like 10m or 20min under water and see how it feels. At least there is a little bit of added pressure and the water temperature could be adjusted. But is that sufficient?

What would be your suggestion?

I'd find a professional to get advice from on a matter that's this important - rather than advice from an internet forum.

Posters here range from abysmally stupid/ignorant/uninformed to brilliant/knowledgeable/subject-matter-experts - the problem is differentiating between them when taking advice.

Mistaking the former for the latter could have serious, potentially life threatening consequences in your case.

If you can't get professional evaluation; then I'd pass on the diving. Suck as that does.

Initially sick
November 8th with lung clear according to doctor.
Then lung problems started to develop
Diagnosis November 25th

Start feeling better/improving feeling, which coincides with data like heart rate, temperature, and breathing rate, oxygen saturation and hrv as well as generic calculated score from my Oura smart ring
About december 1st

Did a 4 storey fast walk up which feeled fine
December 4th

Ears started to not clear
About debember 7th

Still occasional mucus, however unclear from nose or lung
Until about end of last week.

I would be in egypt in the afternoon of devember 22nd, so earliest dive would be december 23rd, but no problem to wait 2 more days, or better do not dive at all?

If you’re not a medical professional yourself, then by your own admission, you should not be giving advice.

It’s quite simple to differentiate between qualified medical advice and “amateur hour advisors” on the forum.

Well here are first of all medical specialists, which you recognize.

I did get a medical advise by calling Aquamed (essentially something similar to DAN), and they advised if I really want to be on the safe side get a lung function test and blood work again.

Unfortunately I messed up on making the appointment in time. So if they said it would be necessary I would not dive. However as it was a mild one, I could bw ok with starting after having no symptoms easy and listen to my body.

Judt trying to get a little bit more info. If I do not feel ready I will not dive.

I know of several people whose symptoms resembled pneumonia but was not showing up on X-rays and turned out to be a type of lung cancer that is 100% curable if diagnosed correctly, not X-rays.

Test breathing in your bathtub would probably not be beneficial, and nobody online should be giving you a recommendation to dive given the information you've provided. You're not far enough out from the illness. Clearance to dive under these circumstances should only come from a qualified provider who has evaluated you in person.

Best regards,
DDM

Thanks for the advice.
While generically I agree to have this in mind, one should not be overfrightened.

In my case it is plausible to have an infection.
I am not prone to lung cancer (never smoked and no smoke from parents passively, not working with hazardous material, no dangerous materials in our house, no family history).
My wife and kid have been sick before, as well as friends & colleagues. From them snd the doctors we know that lots of people hsbe these infections currently.
There have been clear signa of pneumonia including x ray.
Symptoms resolved and got better in an expected time.
Blood work showed no abnormally high values for tumor markers.

So I have no reason to think in that direction.

Thank you very much for this honest answer. I cancel it. Hopefully I can cancel the diving luggage, which was 200 euro.

Is snorkeling ok?
