Just searching for some new survival gear for my vest and came across this. I would say this is probably to most important piece of survival gear you can have if your lost for more than an hour. Dont get me wrong about all the other survival gear is well needed but this is probably your best bet from my experience with search and rescue. I know in the U.S. coast guard we look for 100% of all epirbs reported. and 75% of 406 epirbs are the real deal.

With that said here is the only down fall that I see. It is only H20 proof down to 10 meters. Does anybody out there know were you can get a small water proof case for this that is not huge that you could attatch to your back or something similar. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Here is another idea may sound crazy but....I have a CD in my BC pocket that I take on every dive....Why? It is a great reflector in the sun to signal for help...Never had to use it but it is with me just in case....It does not substitute other signaling equipment but nice to have a back up just in case.

Goof- The Coast Guard recomends against a cd. There not as powerful as a good signal mirror, Not to mention the mirror is a lot smaller. You can read a link that I saw here the other day about not using CD's

Why not just get one of these? I'm sure they'd be available in the states.

Mac, I want a 406 epirb. The 121.5 is not nearly as reliable as a 406. I know that the 406 takes longer to get the ball rolling but atleast you know its rolling. with a 121.5 it may take a while before somebody here's it. Not to mention it takes rescuers longer to find the 121.5 signal. Believe me I have been on enough search and rescue cases looking for 121.5 signals. Thanks for the link. That may be the only option since it is good up to 100m
