Rescue Diver

Hey guys,

Not sure if this is supposed to go here, but I was thinking about taking a rescue diver course this summer and was wondering if you need to be CPR certified before you can take it or do they teach you during the class? There seems to be some confusion in the responses I've gotten from my friends. Can anyone clear it up?

The new rule I believe allow you do do them simultaneously.

You probably should take the cpr class before the rescue training starts.
You'll learn a lot more from the rescue class that way.
It will help your with in water resuscitation and scenerio solutions.

PADI EFR class teaches a great deal and will expose your to O2.
You should take the PADI or DAN 02 class if possible as well.
American Hearts BLS class is also well structured.
However the PADI EFR cert is easier to track.

If you planning on going on to divemaster and/or instructor the more you learn from the rescue class the better. Carry a dan pocket mask or yar rescue mask once certified.

Ask the instructor where you are taking the class. Many instructors are able (not saying we should be) to teach CPR and the instructor will sometimes make that an add-on option for the class.

For PADI - you must have completed a sanctioned CPR/FA course (does not have to be EFR, could be Red Cross, etc) prior to Knowledge Development Presentation 2 and Rescue Training Session 2. It is possible that the LDS may provide a CPR/FA course in conjunction with the RD class. You will have to check. KD2 and RT2 are both going to be day 2 or possibly day one of the class so you should plan on getting your cert ahead of time.

SSI - just states that you must have CPR/FA. It does not specify if you must have it prior to the course. I sometimes teach it as part of the course

I agree with the above post, while not required, I encourage the DAN O2 course as part of or prior to the RD course. Better yet, if the class is going to be potential DM's or instructors I encourage the DAN DEMP course.
