YOU CAN'T PRACTICE ENOUGH!!!
You got that right! As a DM, I try getting on a Rescue course at least once a season just to brush up my skills.

I took my PADI Oxy provider AND my Dan Oxy provider at the same time. The instructor taught for both and taught to both standards in her class.
me too :D

Definite agreement on continued practice.

Here's a question: As a carded rescue diver, would you be allowed to participate in a rescue class as "staff" with the instructor/DM's (given approval by the instructor) or would that be out of bounds with standards/insurance/liability?

"The reason??? Practice is the key... by the time a diver is taking a NAUI Rescue Diver course or an Advanced Rescue Diver course, they know how to deal with things when the ca-ca hits the fan. "

In addition, as long as we are still promoting buddy diving, a buddy team is not a buddy team unless they are both able to help or rescue eachother in a situation. Basic rescue should be included in basic scuba instruction. Otherwise they are diving together, or at least in the same ocean, but in reality diving solo.

Q: I did the Dan 02 Provider course, but was awarded a PADI Oxygen Provider Specialty card with no reference to DAN. Is this normal? If so, why don't DAN issue their own certifications?

DAN does issue their own certificates. If you took a DAN course then it should have been issued through dan not padi.

As a carded rescue diver, would you be allowed to participate in a rescue class as "staff" with the instructor/DM's
Unless my memory is worse than I think, we used to allow Certified Rescue Divers to come along for the ride when we taught the Rescue course. We would use them as victims and stuff. It took the load off of us DM's, let the students concentrate on learning the new skills, and helped reinforce the skills to everyone.

As it often happens, Instructors do allow certified divers to tag along a course, rescue and even basic courses. Used to buddy up, tag along, used as assistants, etc. However every diver participating in a course other than certified insured ai's, dm's and instructors should fill out a student folder and a waver, otherwise they are a liability if they are taking part in a class in any capacity.

most LDS's will let you audit the course. This will put you on their insurance (you are IN the class) in case something does happen. Any LDS that allows non-professionals (lower then DM) to participate without being a part of the class is clearly asking for trouble. They should have you sign the prerequisite waivers, etc and you would be covered!!!

The divers we allowed in had, as I recall, all taken the class through our shop and were along for a refresher. So they were likely auditing the course. I could give the instructor a call to be sure, but the point here is that it is possible to go along in some capacity, often at no charge. The liability waivers are necessary, of course, to protect the shop and the professional personnel.

O-ring:

I spoke directly with the PADI Training Dept today regarding First Aid & CPR requirements for Rescue Diver. They indicated that because the Rescue Diver course itself contains a First Aid component as part of the Knowledge Development section, that they consider this as fufilling the First Aid requirement for Rescue Diver. However, because there is no part of the course that deals directly with CPR, the RD candidate must fufill this part of the course separately. Again, this could be either through the PADI MFA course or another acredited agency.

Since any of my RD Candidates always took the MFA course as well, or had already completed First Aid AND CPR elsewhere, the Knowledge Development section of the course was always a more of a review. I'd never had a diver take it as a "first timer". Hence my statements.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Ya learn something every day! :)

Meanwhile, UKPhil: the PADI O2 Provider course is the DAN course. Generally we issue whichever card the student prefers. If you are concerned about it, ask your Instructor to issue you a DAN card. However, I suspect there will be an additional fee for another card.
