Hi all.
My Naui C card, issued 4/92, is falling apart. I looked at Naui's website, and they have a form to fill out for replacement for "lost" C cards. Costs thirty bucks.
Well, mine isn't lost. It's just falling apart.
Seems kind of steep to me, since it's just a plastic card. Is there an alternative?
I guess I could just laminate the peices back together...

Also, is there a way to find the whereabouts of my instructor? He no longer works at Laguna Sea Sports in Laguna Beach, where I was certified. Wouldn't mind letting him know how much I appreciate all the fun I've had due to his first rate instruction.

I got my C-Card (PADI) EIGHT YEARS after my temp expired. My instructor was not affliliated with a dive shop (met him in college) and i moved. Had trouble tracking him down. I went out on PADI's site and hoping against hope it was in their system, entered my instructor's OWI number (by luck alone, i still had the old temp card (seriously falling apart) (needless to say, i had had an 8 year hiatus from diving). Wouldn't you know it, they had my name and cert date in their system. (I had followed the instructions for getting a new card that was printed on the back of the temp card twice (to the tune of 40 bucks) over the years with no luck.) 2 weeks later i had my permanent card.

But as for your situation. Laminate it or cough up the cash. If you lose or mangle your driver's license, you have to pay the DMV/RMV, right? Same thing here. Or you could opt for the next level up in training and get a NEW card. But that will likely be MUCH more than a replacement card ;)

As for finding your instructor, you could call the shop he was last located at and see if they know what happened to him. Or you could do an anywho search.

If you want a new card I don't think you have much choice. I glued my PADI card from 90 together for a few years until I broke down and sent them money for a new one, but it does seem like a rip off. Fine for them to make a few bucks on it but I'm sure they're making more than a few bucks. They were doing cards that combined Nitrox with your other cert on one card so that was kind of nice anyway.

You could always take some other class like Rescue and then you'll have a new card from that...think of it as $30 off the new class.

for thirty bucks I'd laminate it back together.

Then I'd spend the $30 bucks towards Advanced Open Water or Nitrox class,
where, you'll get a new card and a better spend for your money.
(just an alternative).

Thanks for the replies all. I guess I'll laminate it for now, but I guess I oughta go ahead and get my AOW pretty soon. I'd Kinda like to stick with NAUI though, just 'cause the card is so pretty. :D

As far as finding my instructor, I have his number on my card, and all I remember is his first name. Think maybe NAUI would help me out? Probably a privacy issue though.

I'd think you might have a privacy issue. You don't have his name on the card? (My padi one does) Do you know if the dive shop he was with is still around? They might be able to reach him without the beauracracy of dealing with an "agency"

I thought about getting new cards just because the picture on them is but a wistful memory of how I looked in 1979/1980/and 1983. If the DM really wanted to see them he or she would need to check my drivers license to make sure it's really me. ;)

Naw Six String, my card just has his number and the name of the LDS. I have his sig in my log book, but he must've been a doctor too, cause I can't make it out.

Queen, your card has your pic on it? Which agency? I also noticed you live in Central Illinois? I live on the "west coast", in Grafton Il, right on the Mississippi.

Yours doesn't have a pic? My pop is NAUI certified from some gig in the Bahamas, his doesnt have his pic either. But i thought that was just down there. SSI and PADI both require pictures.
