I just purchased an SK-7 compass in the wrist-mounted format. I am planning purchasing the DSS SK-7 wrist mount instead, but how do I get the compass out of the wrist mount it comes in? It seems to be in there pretty good and I certainly don't want to break anything.

Reviewed the other thread, but wanted to add that I cut mine out of the boot very easily and with no risk to the compass by using a small pair of wire cutters. Sliced right through the boot material with no force applied to the compass underneath.

Thanks for sharing. I was actually hoping to get it out of the boot without having to destroy it just in case I need it as a backup. But then again, if it looks like I might be risking injury to the compass, nice to know that this option works so easily.

Yes, the compass-ectomy was successful but the patient (boot) died :)

I ran mine under hot tap water for a minute and it came right out.

Just something to share.

I went out to a LDS (an official sole distributor of Suunto products) looking to buy a SK7 compass for the DSS boot I bought. Was hoping that I could simply buy the compass capsule (liquid filled compass), the bezel, and the friction rings without having to spend the extra money for a wrist mount just to take those parts out. Luckily, the shop do sell them separately. I understood that they are parts the shop uses for replacements when customer have their gauge sent for service. This save 40% (from the retail price of the standard wrist mount) and not having to worry about disassembling the parts.

So if any of you are looking to get the parts just for the DSS boots, don't hesitate to check with your LDS for the various parts.

If you buy the console mount compass its also $10 cheaper than the wrist mount .

If you have the wrist mount, dunk it in hot water, take a wrist strapin each hand and push up with your thumbs.
